You'll connect with real-time television viewers and a growing app-based audience using state-of-the-art digital and broadcast tools & established workflows. This is a chance to grow your experience as a weather expert, getting countless reps in a fast-paced environment.
WWSB-TV, ABC7 in Sarasota, is searching for its next First Alert Meteorologist / MMJ. This full-time teammate will connect with audiences on all station platforms, including live newscasts, live digital and social streams, and by telling weather-related, environmental and lifestyle stories in the field.
Successful candidates are driven by helping others- forecasting the weather not only on days of endless sunshine, but when tropical weather, rain, and wind put lives at risk. Most weeks, you'll support Weekend Afternoon & Evening shifts on Digital and Broadcast platforms. Weekdays, you'll help tell meaningful stories for our coastal communities.
As a First Alert Meteorologist, you'll work side-by-side with a team of veteran meteorologists, anchors, producers and directors to create up-to-the minute segments, broadcast and web stories, and shareable posts.
Our station produces 54 hours of local content each week, so expect significant amounts of additional forecasting when you're not in the field. Mix that with a caring work culture, dedicated to a very specific audience, and it's a unique opportunity to get multiple reps while competing for viewers in a very large market.
Yes, you'll need to know local geography, have a solid weather foundation, and be able to tell a good story-both on set, at the chroma key and on the ABC7 Digital Live Desk, using the latest technology, including WSI/The Weather Company systems, vMix and ARC Content Management Systems.
NOTE: WWSB-TV monitors and regularly covers extreme weather threats, including strong Tropical Storms and Hurricanes. All journalists play a vital role in the ABC7 newsroom response, helping connect viewers and digital users with life-saving news and information. Safety is always our top priority, and all teammates and management are required to be present at the station to serve our local community before, during, and after a storm.
Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Forecast for Digital Platforms and Newscasts as assigned
- Produce & present clear, confident, and thoughtful weather reports on live and recorded digital and broadcast platforms
- Craft Multiple ''First Alert Forecasts'' for web and push alerts to viewers
- Pre-tape daily weather ''quick hit'' reports for later newscasts
- Interact with newsmakers, guests, and viewers in person and via phone and email
- Produce and deliver in-the-field stories and show-and-tell live shots as assigned
- Create graphics and lower thirds for segments, stories, and posts.
- Write copy for web and edit video for multiple digital platforms
- Shoot and edit video using traditional ENG and Cellular Consumer Technology
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Two years of forecasting, reporting, or producing experience is helpful.
- Working knowledge of WSI Traffic/Weather Systems
- Demonstrated ability to write web articles and app pushes
- Eagerness to create a brand by connecting with users on the ABC7 Live Desk
- A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and ability to collaborate
- An internship in a commercial newsroom
- A degree or intensive course work in meteorology, communications, and/or journalism
