Job Description
WGAL News 8, the Hearst-owned NBC affiliate serving the Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York, PA market, is looking for our next leader in the weather department. We are looking for someone who knows the science of forecasting and can tell a relatable weather story. You will be an accurate forecaster, convey appropriate tone for the situation, summarize complicated information, and be able to use the latest technology. You will also manage a team of meteorologists and will demonstrate and communicate our coverage plan to producers, anchors, reporters, video journalists, and our digital team. The Chief Meteorologist is an important part of the news management team. You will report to the News Director.
Responsibilities
• Provide viewers with accurate, compelling, and understandable forecasts
• Create dynamic and innovative graphics to help tell the weather story with clarity
• Lead the weather team to create a synergized, connected and accurate forecast
• Provide urgent weather information that helps the audience prepare for active and severe weather
• Get on first for severe weather, providing real-time storm tracks, analysis and other information to keep viewers safe
• Coach and encourage other members of the weather department
• Coordinate and execute bi-annual weather specials
• Contribute to daily editorial meetings
• Go live in the field for active weather events
• Consistently contribute engaging content on all TV, digital and social platforms
• Operate with unwavering journalistic integrity and ethical standards
• Must be willing to work flexible hours as needed, especially for severe weather
Requirements
• 5-10 years of forecasting experience
• Dynamic, polished and authoritative presence with a conversational weather presentation
• In-depth knowledge of weather science and microclimate forecasting
• Experience in handling breaking weather coverage, including storms, tornadoes, blizzards, floods, hazardous winds, extreme heat, etc.
• Proficient in using the Weather Company's MAX system and other weather technology
• CBM, AMS and/or NWA seal
• Bilingual experience is a plus
• Related military experience will be considered
