Job Description
Business Insights Analyst, Random House

Random House is seeking a Business Insights Analyst to join our Analytics team. This team translates insights into actionable recommendations for our publishing, marketing, editorial, and sales colleagues and has a unique birds-eye view into the publishing process. Questions you might be asked include: What are consumers searching for? And when? Which titles perform best in price promos? How did our metadata changes impact sales? What other titles is our consumer buying? Should we publish a paperback, and when? What's driving growth in the market in X category, and what areas have softened?

You'll report to the Director of Business Insights and collaborate with the larger Analytics team to develop insights and recommendations to help teams across the Random House Publishing Group make informed, data-driven decisions, particularly related to search, pricing analysis, and marketing attribution. The role will have a particular focus on Amazon as well as other online marketplace data, performing product research, analyzing current trends, and contributing to other aspects of our ecommerce business partnering with our metadata team.

This is an excellent opportunity with strong growth potential for a curious person looking to flex their analytical muscles and learn about the book publishing business.

The day to day responsibilities:
• Respond to research requests from internal stakeholders and identify answerable business questions in those requests
• Define inputs, extract and analyze data from multiple sources (including marketplace data, internal sales, DMAs, search, etc.), and synthesize outputs into a cohesive narrative
• Distill analyses into clear and actionable insights
• Communicate findings via compelling reports (using visuals and effective storytelling to bring insights to life) and/or informal presentations with internal stakeholders
• Uncover new trends in titles and categories on Amazon
• Explore relationships between e-commerce performance data and first-party data to learn more about consumer habits and demographics
• Analyze metadata changes to assess impact; make recommendations
• Assess pricing promotions by type, category, pricing band, and rate of movement
• Analyze marketing and publicity events by title, author, or event type to recommend course of action on future campaigns

The requirements:
• 2 to 4 years relevant work experience; business insights or finance preferred
• Demonstrated analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills-comfortable with both quantitative and qualitative data
• Experience using SQL-based exploratory analytics tools
• Fluent in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word); experience with business intelligence software such as Power BI and Business Objects is a plus
• Familiarity with Python and R is a plus
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work on multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously
• Demonstrated eagerness to learn and to dig into data from a variety of angles
• Interest in or knowledge of Publishing and/or Media is a plus
