Assistant/Associate Editor, Avery & TarcherPerigee
Avery and TarcherPerigee, imprints of Penguin Random House, seek an Assistant/Associate Editor to join their team. Reporting to the Executive Editor, the Assistant/Associate Editor will provide administrative and editorial support to a collaborative editorial team whose lists include some of the most renowned experts, thought leaders, and influencers in the health, wellness, self-help, and cooking categories. The Assistant/Associate Editor will work on a range of nonfiction titles, with a special focus on 4-color cookbooks, as well as accessible science, psychology, relationships, parenting, self-improvement, lifestyle, spirituality, and gift/inspiration. This position provides the opportunity to collaborate on the overall editorial process, build knowledge of the ''big picture'' of our industry, and develop an editorial focus.
Daily responsibilities include all-around project support for the editors, scheduling meetings, proposal/manuscript reading, drafting online and jacket copy, and brainstorming creative publishing approaches and solutions to help authors/books through the publication process.

We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who loves books of all types and is invested in the process of bringing them to a wide readership, has strong writing and analytical skills, communicates clearly , is comfortable asking for help when needed, and wants to be an active participant on a collaborative team. This role can lead to greater editorial responsibilities over time.

This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities, which will include but not be limited to executing mailings and participating in and contributing to in-person meetings with authors and agents. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).
The Role includes:
• Providing administrative and editorial support to an executive editor
• Overseeing the editorial process for projects from acquisition to publication, including manuscript development, line editing, and interfacing with the production team
• Assisting in the acquisitions process by reading and evaluating submissions
• Coordinating schedules with the Editorial, Managing Editorial, and Production teams
• Preparing manuscripts for production, including manuscripts with illustrations and photography
• Providing team support to the editorial group when needed
• Developing relationships and communicating with authors and agents
• Communicating and responding to the needs of a variety of internal departments, including Marketing, Publicity, Sales, Production, and Art
• Preparing paperwork, including contract requests, profit and loss statements, and production memos
• Writing title information sheets, online copy, and cover copy
• Managing multiple in-house systems, ranging from Teams to SAP, CIS, and more
The Essential Qualifications:
• 2+ years of trade book editorial experience, (specializing in nonfiction is a plus but not a requirement to succeed in this role)
• A strong interest or history of working with 4-color books is a plus
• Ability to prioritize multiple assignments in a deadline-driven environment
• Ability to work independently as well as within a team
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Familiarity and/or interest in the current marketplace and an interest in food, personal growth, psychology, and wellness.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proven ability to use available resources to problem-solve
• Interest in visual design aesthetics
• Familiarity with social media platforms
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat
• Ability to demonstrate competence with numerous and varying systems or programs
The salary for an Assistant Editor is $53,000, and for an Associate Editor is $63,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
Penguin Random House job postings include a good faith compensation range for each open position. The salary range listed is specific to each particular open position and takes into account various factors including the specifics of the individual role, and candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
