The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Consultant is a critical position for a grant-funded project spearheaded by Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and PBS Digital Studios (PBSDS). This is a contract, consultant position that will last approximately 18 months from the start date. The start date for this role is September 2023.
The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Consultant will be a key advisor and strategic leader of an initiative focused on creating inclusive content for diverse online audiences, balancing tactical thinking with an ability to execute and operationalize processes. She/he/they will partner closely with the PBS Digital Studios team, the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Office, Grant-Funded Digital Executive Producers (DEP), Member Station Producers, and the Grant Project Manager to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion are consciously and authentically considered throughout all facets of the project.
About the Project
With support from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting (CPB), PBS Digital Studios is partnering with different Member Stations across the country to help build digital production capacity through the creation of new, diverse multiplatform series, regional workshops (Digital Voltage workshops) and trainings.
Contract Term:
Approx. 18 Months
PBS is estimating 40-50 hours of work per month at a rate of $75/hour.
Consultant is expected to deliver on the following key areas of responsibility within the approximate time assumptions through the conclusion of the grant.
• Creative Content & DEI Feedback (65-75%)
• Materials & Events Design & Feedback (10-25%)
• Includes grant deliverables such as DEI Project Plan, Inclusive Production Guidebook, Digital Training Workshops, and Audience Strategy Guide Co-Development
• Strategic Advising (5-10%)
• Sourcing Talent (5%)
• Reporting (5%): quarterly, as requested, and a final report
• Travel (up to 5%): only upon request and mutual availability
• Potential Travel may include:
• Oct 11-13, 2023, PBS Digital Studios Summit (confirmed)
• May 13-15, 2024, PBS Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, NV (tentative)
• Spring - Fall 2024, Digital Voltage workshops in 3 locations (dates TBD)
Essential duties will include, but are not limited to:
• Work with PBS Digital Studios, PBS DEI Office, Digital Executive Producers (DEPs), Member Station personnel, and producers from each region to ensure all project work considers diverse communities and audiences.
• Work with PBS Digital Studios, PBS DEI Office, DEPs, and other producers to evaluate content themes, topics, scripts, and overall editorial, ensuring it reflects and serves communities and audiences.
• Specifically, review select scripts and rough cuts for episodes and vertical videos, providing feedback, comments, and suggestions
• Work with PBS Digital Studios, PBS DEI Office, and DEPs to develop, advise, and execute on discussions regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion for digital production training workshops.
• Work with the Grant Project Manager to design valid assessment tools for PBS Member Stations to analyze their production workflow and culture - leading to more inclusive environments
• Work with the Grant Project Manager to report on diversity inclusion strategy, progress, and results for submitted evaluations.
Requirements for success:
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience; graduate degree in media, television, digital video production, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and/or Storytelling preferred
• A minimum of four (4) years of experience in a field related to media, television, digital video production; more experience preferred
• A minimum of four (4) years of experience consulting, contributing, or working in DEI; more experience preferred
• Experience as a producer, administrator, and/or manager, establishing agility and productivity as a leader, including but not limited to the accomplishment of successful and innovative projects for media, television, and digital video production
• Excellent writing, communications, and presentation skills; published work or leadership as a writer in media, television, digital video production preferred
• Strong analytical skills and understanding of change management techniques, including but not limited to root cause analyses and restorative practices
• Experience as a leader and innovator on digital platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, or similar platforms
• Knowledge of public television guidelines and practices regarding program distribution is a plus
• Experience establishing effective relationships, influence, driving consensus, and collaborating internally and externally at all organizational levels
• Experience in identifying trends in the DEI space and executing complex, cross-functional initiatives
Important: Consultant will be expected to have, and maintain during his/her/their engagement with PBS, customary insurance policies and limits subject to standard PBS terms, including commercial general liability insurance and Errors & Omissions (E&O) Insurance.
