Overview and Responsibilities
The Executive Producer develops, oversees, and supervises the editorial direction, field production and post-production of SMITH, MTV News and other documentary, news and factual programming within the MTV Entertainment group. S/he/they takes a leading role in the development of new productions working to extend the brand in new directions and into new genres. The Executive Producer has overall responsibility for the editorial direction and production of one-off specials and series. Work activities include developing programming, taking pitches, writing treatments, researching and assessing ideas and finished scripts, selecting key staff and pulling together all strands of creative and practical talent involved in the project.
The Executive Producer is one of five in this position and reports to the Head of Channel. The VP Original Documentaries has a dotted line to this role and will assign projects as well. This role works closely with Development, Production and Post-Production.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Create and develop programming for SMITH, MTV News and other MTVE brands.
• Provide editorial direction and supervision for SMITH productions
• Supervise and provide editorial critique for productions
• Build and manage relationships with Smithsonian museums and departments
• Create, build and develop relationships with documentary, factual and news production companies
• Create and assess draft budgets
• Supervise shoots in the field, as needed
• Represent channel head at events as needed
Decision making/accountability:
The Executive Producer assists Production in developing budgets for approval. During Production and Post-Production, he or she is responsible for ensuring projects are in line with approved budgets. The Executive Producer, with the support of the post team, has the authority to shift amounts between budget line items on individual projects if necessary, to achieve better editorial product. The Executive Producer ensures on-time delivery of all final master tapes according to network technical and programming specifications.
Basic Qualifications
• Must have 10 years' experience in long form non-fiction television production. Should have produced quality, ratings winning programming for national broadcast.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent preferred, higher graduate degree viewed favorably.
