PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Senior News Editor job gives you the opportunity to help craft CNN's reporting on some of the most important, interesting and challenging stories of our time.

The Senior News Editor manages day-to-day coverage of global news events on the assignment desk in Hong Kong. This person ensures the quality, speed and accuracy of our storytelling. Serving as the editorial gatekeeper, the SNE plays a central role in communicating information between the field and our TV and Digital platforms. This role also handles safety and security on APAC deployments. The successful candidate will manage several direct reports and be a part of the Hong Kong newsdesk management team.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Assignments:
• Manages the editorial content and communicates it to all platforms. Assigns resources to stories and ensures clear communication to the field teams.
• Assigns Newsdesk Producers to teams in the field. Responsible for managing the hours worked by field teams.
• Works in close communication with SNE counterparts and Directors of Coverage around the world.

Client Communication:
• Senior News Editors are responsible for sending out urgent alerts to all platforms, liaising with control rooms and Digital supervisors on matters of editorial importance and breaking news.
• Ensure that all coverage and guidance on stories is communicated properly to platforms.
• Responsible for bringing security, legal, S+P and editorial issues to the attention of the DOC.

Performance Management:

This person is a part of the newsdesk management team. They are responsible for the management of their direct reports throughout the year. They will mentor desk employees and train and manage temporary employees and new staff for whom they are responsible. Gives regular feedback to direct reports and other Newsdesk producers with whom they work.

Financial Responsibility:
• Ensures the Desk is fiscally responsible.
• Manages spending by making decisions about story assignments and resources based on the budget allocated.
• Makes recommendations on spending in conjunction with senior managers.

Safety:

Having oversight of team safety on deployment in step with the Directors of Coverage, Snr Director of Futures and Security representatives. Ensure team safety is always the first consideration and at the heart of deployment decisions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
• Undergraduate degree in journalism or related studies
• Professional journalism training preferred or may be substituted with work experience in the industry of some years.
• 7+ years' experience in television or digital journalism
• 2+ years' experience directing or managing others
• Work experience abroad in international journalism is preferred
• Digital and Social proficiency
• Fluency in a second language preferred
• Will be required to work morning, evening and weekend shifts on a rotating basis
• May be assigned to other global locations
• Should be capable of acting up to Director of Coverage level.
