At the doorstep of the Smoky Mountains and on the banks of the Tennessee River, Knoxville
is home the 61st largest television market in the country. In addition, Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee's flagship campus, a walkable downtown, sophisticated mix of culture and cuisine, a diverse and robust employment sector, advanced medical care, and amenities found in big cities yet in a city that retains a small-town feel. In addition to producing 50 hours of newscasts each week on CBS affiliate WVLT, the station takes advantage of its co-owned CW-affiliate and to expand its news audience by producing two hours of additional weekday morning news and nightly 10 p.m. newscast. WVLT is also Knoxville's proud sports leader featuring franchises such as the Masters, March Madness, the SEC game of the week, The NFL on CBS, Live high school games of the week throughout the season, and the High School playoffs and championship game, as well. As the flagship station for The Vol Network we also feature exclusivity on University of Tennessee coach's shows and various sports programming.
Job Summary/Description:
WVLT-TV is looking for a News Director who will lead and manage news coverage across television and digital platforms. The candidate must have proven newsroom leadership experience with a track record of success. You will take charge of a competitive, award-winning news product and ensure it moves to the next level no matter where today's news consumers decide to watch or view us. The candidate must also demonstrate an understanding and enthusiasm for evolving digital, social and mobile media. In a market that is fiercely competitive, you will ensure the station's content delivers audience growth by being distinct, research driven, and community focused.
The primary job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:• Outstanding knowledge of television news operations and other media platforms
• Expertise in enhancing the presentation and delivery of news content through coaching and mentoring staff
• Strong editorial judgment and leader in the newsroom
• Understands the importance of recruiting and creating a culture of success in the newsroom
• Proven administrative skills with budgeting, planning and staff scheduling
• Ability to work closely with other station department heads and fellow managers within the company
• Ability to meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks
Qualifications/Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field
5 to 7 years' experience in television news management
Strong management, communication and people skills required to supervise and interact daily with staff and the community
Proven leadership ability
Creativity and passion for news
Knowledge and understanding in using various digital and social platforms
Strong organizational skills
Ability to multi-task in high stress situations
