Television reporters at WRIC ABC 8News are enterprising storytellers who are not afraid to ask the hard questions. They make contacts in the community and tell people's stories, and they report the news without fear or favor. They also know great video when they see it and know how to tell stories with a visual impact.

At 8News, television reporters will:
• Create news reports for broadcast, including researching and writing, as well as shooting and editing video. This includes researching a topic, understanding the emphasis of the story, and organizing the information so that it's engaging for the audience.
• Establish contacts and arrange interviews with people who can provide information.
• Write for broadcast using correct grammar and punctuation and follow our editorial style and formatting guidelines. Additionally, reporters will also write their stories for our website.
• Ensure that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
• Appear on air daily in designated newscasts.



You'll be expected to:
• Pitch stories to news managers and news producers which are relevant to the local community.
• Receive assignments and be able to evaluate leads and develop the story.
• Gather information about topics by attending events, conducting thorough research, interviewing people, reading news coverage, monitoring social media channels and participating in the community.
• Shoot and edit news events and news reports.
• Meet daily deadlines.
• Report solo live shots with TVU backpack and TVU Anywhere mobile.
• Interact with viewers/users on social media sites.
• Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.



The ideal candidate will:
• Have an undergraduate degree in broadcast journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
• Possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required.
• Have a minimum two years' experience in news reporting, depending on market size.
• ​Have a superior on-air presence.
• Be proficient with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment.
• Meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Be fluent in English.
• Have a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
• Be flexible to work any shift including overnights and weekends.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work near others, work outdoors occasionally in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. In addition, must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
