Job Summary/Description:

Madison's #1 News Station, WMTV, has a rare and immediate opening for an evening anchor/reporter. Our longtime anchor is retiring in 2023. The top candidate has big shoes to fill and will be a dynamic, high-level storyteller who delivers every day.
Our evening 5/6/10 p.m. co-anchor contributes daily to elevating our team and newscasts and is an ambassador of the station-championing our community initiatives. This is a high-profile position demanding leadership and initiative.

The person we hire must make a daily and noticeable impact on our product. You will be a mentor to others on our team. You are willing to evolve and try new things. The way we've always done things, no longer cuts it.

Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
• Work with a sense of immediacy independently and as a team. It is our culture.
• Write and post copy on all digital platforms as new information is learned. This includes NBC15.com, social media, our news app, OTT and within our television newscasts).
• Execute a digital plan tailored to your assignment and long-term projects. This includes posting to social media throughout your shift, identifying opportunities for live streaming on our website and Facebook, getting breaking news, live and user-generated content into our newscasts.
• Understand our DMA, key target audiences and where they live.
• Mentor, guide, and give storytelling and feedback to new producer and MMJ hires.
• Have the desire to win and the ability to reflect on your work and apply feedback.
• Strong research skills, ability to employ critical thinking skills to dig and go ''beyond the press release'' and/or confirm incoming news tips via email or social media.
• Develop sources within the community to gain unique, ''Only On'' insight and reports on timely, important and impactful issues. If you wait for the news to come to you, this is not the job for you. You are expected to go ''beyond the press release'' and find impactful stories. The ideal candidate will also have experience in investigative and data-driven journalism.
• Our anchors are expected to write and contribute daily to newscasts. You will work with the News Director and Assignment Manager to produce bi-weekly promotable packages. Produce and deliver occasional day-turns, as well as special event coverage. It is also common for our anchors to field anchor breaking news and high-profile reports.

Qualifications/Description:
• Minimum three years of newsroom experience. A college degree in journalism or related field.
• Must have an established and responsible presence on digital platforms, including station website, social media and OTT.
• Understanding of and adherence to AP Style (on digital platforms) and broadcast writing for television.
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), proven news judgement, ethics and integrity.
• Strong work ethic, organizational and leadership skills. Must be able to work quickly, make deadlines, multi-task and show composure, especially during breaking news.
• Ability to work long hours/overtime, weekends, and overnights as needed for breaking news and specialized coverage.
• Must be able to carry 35+ pounds of gear, and be experienced in shooting and editing unique content. All of our anchors are expected to know how to MMJ, if needed. We do have photographers to partner with on appropriate assignments.
