Part-time News Reporter/Producer

WLNS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Lansing, Michigan seeks a curious person who loves writing and telling stories. The News Reporter/Producer will play a key role on our team by creating fresh local content for our website. This is a rare opportunity for a position with Lansing's leading news outlet. Work with the experienced team at WLNS-CBS, WLAJ-ABC, ELAJ-CW, and WLNS.COM. You will spend time in each department, learning all aspects of the business, as well as get hands-on experience in the production of live newscasts, the digital news operation, sales, and engineering. The news business is 24/7, so you will join our team on some nights and weekends, but we will work with your schedule the best that we can. This position is open immediately and is expected to continue through Fall of 2023. The term of employment is negotiable. Network with industry leaders in the nation's largest broadcast television company, get hands-on experience and get paid. While we cannot promise any future employment opportunities, our company has many job openings on a regular basis. This position is open to current students or anyone who is interested in exploring a new career.
• Write stories and update the website with fresh content
• Create engaging social media posts that will get people's attention
• Use push alerts to send out breaking news
• Arranges and conduct interviews with people who can provide information about stories both live and taped
• Reviews copy and corrects errors in content, grammar and punctuation, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines
• Reviews and evaluates notes taken about event aspects to isolate pertinent facts and details
• Determines a story's emphasis, length and format, and organizes material accordingly
• Researches and analyzes background information related to news stories to be able to provide complete and accurate information
• Gathers information about events through research, interviews, experience or attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, social or other functions
• Pitches stories to news managers and news producers which are relevant to the local community
• Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas
• Discusses issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities or positions
• Checks reference materials such as books, news files or public records to obtain relevant facts
• Revises work to meet editorial approval or to fit time requirements
• Produces and presents reports for all platforms
• Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality
• Writes stories for the web and other eMedia platforms
• Interacts with viewers/users on social media sites
• Performs special projects and other duties as assigned

Requirements & Skills:
• Should have or be working towards Bachelor's degree in Journalism or a related field or have an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience
• Fluency in English
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required
• Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment
• Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record
• Flexibility to work any shift
