Job Summary/Description:
WKYT - home to the #1 local news and digital media in Lexington, Kentucky - is looking for a dynamic, innovative, and experienced Sports Director to lead its sports coverage in a new direction. We're looking for a creative, outgoing sports journalist with a team-oriented, positive approach who knows how to lead a team and produce outstanding coverage with an emphasis on storytelling across multiple platforms. In addition to coverage on the #1 rated on-air newscasts, our streaming channel, WKYT+, is home to a new nightly streaming sports-talk program offering new ways to reach viewers.
As home to the University of Kentucky, Lexington is one of the best college sports markets in the country. In addition to other colleges, the area is home to robust high school athletics and a professional soccer club. This is also the ''Horse Capital of the World,'' where the world-famous Bluegrass region is home to the best equine farms and care facilities in the nation, Keeneland Race Course, and is the birthplace of Triple Crown-winning thoroughbred horses. If that's not enough, Lexington is one of the home markets for the Cincinnati Bengals and Reds
Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
The successful candidate will be responsible for (but not limited to) the following:
• Enterprise, produce, and turn stories daily.
• Serve as the primary sports talent.
• Coordinate and plan coverage, including special reports. Be forward-looking and plan ahead for events.
• Shoot, write, and edit sports stories and highlights with an emphasis on covering local sports.
• Produce sports segments and programming for on-air and on digital platforms.
• Be sports content-driven; this is your beat. Own it. Write and post sports stories on multiple social media and digital platforms.
• Report live from various sporting events.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Degree in sports journalism, broadcasting, communications, or related field.
• At least 10 years of professional newsroom experience required. Prior experience as a Sports Director is preferred.
• An engaging and comfortable on-air personality to include live shots.
• The ability and desire to enterprise and produce local sports stories and content.
• Excellent communicator with a focus on detailed planning.
• Team player with a positive attitude.
