About WECT:

We're in the rapidly growing Wilmington market, serving New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus, Pender, and Bladen Counties that make up the beautiful coastal Cape Fear Region. WECT is the dominant broadcast station in the market with the most accessible local news on-air, online, mobile, and streaming platforms.
Job Summary/Description:
WECT News is seeking a hybrid Digital Content Producer/Multi-media Journalist. This would be a split shift -- some days working as a DCP and others working as an MMJ/Reporter. We're looking for someone to produce engaging content for our digital and social platforms and who has a knack for news and speaks the social media language. This position is not for someone who wants to sit around and wait for the news to come to them. The successful candidate must be driven, creative, and an active content creator. We are looking for a top-notch digital journalist who can write an AP-style news story for the web quickly and without errors. This producer/reporter will also step in front of the camera to provide live reports (both from the field and from our digital news streaming desk).
Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Digital Content Producer:
• Writes AP-style news stories daily for the web
• Subsequently posts engaging content on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms.
• Sends breaking news and trending push alerts
• Utilizes analytics to track trends in daily decision-making
• Copy-edits digital stories from reporters and other newsroom staff
• Knowledge and use of effective SEO practices
• Livestream events using station technology for web and Facebook
• Monitors comments and messages on the WECT social media pages
• Creates memes, videos, and graphics for social engagement
• Communicates effectively with producers to incorporate web and social elements into newscasts
• Attends and contributes to digital and editorial meetings
• Edits videos using non-linear software; Edius is a plus
MMJ/Reporter:
• Pitch 3 viable, developed story ideas per shift (not topics)
• Develop and cultivate sources; enterprise stories
• Produce a minimum of one package or two to three VOSOTs per shift
• Create engaging digital and social content
Qualifications/Requirements:
• A background in journalism and communications with strong writing skills is preferred
• A solid understanding of social media and analytics
• 1-2 years of newsroom, reporting, and/or digital content producing experience preferred, but not required
• Must have a solid grasp of AP Style, the ability to write clearly with sound grammar, and work under deadline pressure
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field preferred
• Strong writing skills (broadcast and print style)
• Experience with CMS/digital publishing platforms
• Experience with broadcast newsroom software such as ENPS
• Experience with video editing software (preferably Edius) preferred
• Must be able to lift 25-30 lbs and pass a motor vehicle background check
