Discovery introduced Max, an enhanced streaming platform, in the US HBO Max is currently available in 46 countries and there are plans for the continued global expansion of Max in 2024.

The Role
A Video Engineer's primary responsibilities include research, design, and implementation of complex media workflows enabling WBD's Content Supply Chain and delivery of the best video quality to our customers. The VE discipline covers a wide range of specialties within media engineering including compression, quality analysis, post workflows, file-based workflows, media analysis, production workflows, production tools, and others. Video Engineers can be specialists or generalists. They can ''own'' operational systems or serve as consultants, bringing their expertise to software development teams that need their specialized knowledge. A VE must be knowledgeable about a wide range of media formats, standards, and tools. The VE may engage with stakeholders to gather project requirements and communicate results. A VE may prepare documentation related to project planning, design, status, and technical specifications.
This position is part of WBD's Media Supply Chain Technology team, a group focused on the convergence of media engineering and software engineering . The VE II works with the Director of Media Supply Chain Technology to complete evaluations of media technology hardware, software, and workflows. These tools will include common professional media products such as transcoding systems and media processing tools, but may also include experimental or prototype equipment. The VE II is a clear thinker who can understand, create, and execute complex test plans and work with a wide range of production, post -production, broadcast, software, and cloud products.
Responsibilities
1. Create video, audio, and caption/subtitle encoding profiles based on detailed partner specifications
2. Function as a technology and encoding resource to other groups and departments by helping to create test media, encoder settings, and workflows for hardware and software used throughout the company
3. Create and execute test plans and research with the assistance of the Director and fellow VEs, then accurately compile the results into coherent documentation. Test plans will require the VE II to work with a wide range of broadcast and IT equipment including non-linear editing systems, broadcast and IP routing systems, encoding and transcoding systems, and many other professional media tools
4. Create and execute video quality evaluations on media files, including automated picture quality analysis. Interpret the results and report findings to the group and to other groups within the company
5. Port encoding profiles or media workflows from one tool to another
6. Methodically troubleshoot software and hardware issues, both on-prem or in the cloud
7. Assess functional requirements for cloud or on-prem software and hardware solutions and make recommendations based on stakeholder requirements
8. Serve as the primary technical contact for one or more vendors and are responsible for validating updates, requesting new features, and tracking bugs/issues in applications currently in use
9. Represent the department in meetings with other teams and bring action items back to the group
10. Take on a leading role in defining workflow solutions and provide operational guidance to junior engineers
11. Take an active role in authoring technical documentation for existing and new projects
12. Provide regular updates to the Director on work in progress as well as short term and long-term priorities
13. Collaborate across teams and across multiple time zones
Requirements
1. Bachelor's degree in media technology, engineering, production, or information technology preferred
2. 4+ years' experience in the television/film industry
3. Advanced knowledge of media formats, metadata, timecode, frame rates, and subtitles/closed captions
4. Ability to quickly learn new concepts, systems, and tools
5. Clear communicator with good verbal and written communications skills
6. Familiarity with common production, post production, and distribution tools including the Adobe Creative Suite, Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro, broadcast camera systems and camcorders, file based media workflows, transcoding systems, and video and audio measurement tools
7. Familiarity with cloud-based platforms and tools including Amazon AWS, Google GCP, Microsoft Azure a plus
8. Understanding of API/REST coding and interactions between systems
9. Basic understanding of one or more programming and scripting languages (Python preferred)
10. Experience with machine readable file formats like JSON, XML, CSV
11. Experience with AI/ML a plus
12. Experience with video quality evaluation a plus
13. Programming or web development experience recommended
14. Must be able to lift 50 pounds
15. Must be willing to travel if required
16. Must have the legal right to work in the United States
