Political Desk Editor, Political Unit (Project Role)

Your New Role…

The Political Desk Editor works with the Political Unit to ensure that CNN is covering the day's most important political news stories and manages resources to make it happen effectively. The political desk manages CNN's minute-by-minute political coverage and is a vital part of the network's newsgathering apparatus.

This is a project-based position through January 31, 2025.

Your Role Accountabilities…

A political desk editor:
• Serves as the primary point person for field teams, including correspondents and embedded producers, as they interact with all of CNN's television and digital platforms.
• Coordinates logistics and live shot specifics.
• Distributes editorial information to the network from field teams.
• Monitors and files editorial notes from various live campaign events.
• Ensures that all incoming signals are being properly recorded and alerted to the network.
• Monitors social media to identify developing political stories.
• Assists in the planning of future assignments, including resource deployment.

Qualifications & Experience…
• Minimum three to five years in news, with previous newsroom or assignment desk experience.
• Strong editorial news judgement with a keen interest in politics.
• The ability to multitask and make quick decisions under deadline, taking into account the network's current editorial priorities.
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to keep calm under pressure.
• Strong writing skills. Understanding of CNN's newsgathering process is an advantage.
• This position may require early morning/late night hours and the possibility of working weekends.
• BA/BS in journalism, politics or a related field preferred or equivalent in experience.
