Job Description
Your New Role…
This is a role for an experienced editor who is a best-in-class shaper and sharpener of stories and ideas, with expertise in climate science and weather. This person thrives on the breakneck pace of deadline journalism and has strong news judgment and newsgathering skills. This person is also a strong collaborator who can work with meteorologists, writers, reporters and correspondents around the newsroom to manage daily coverage of extreme weather and shape distinctive stories about one of the most urgent crises of our time. This editor would help build on the success of CNN Climate's high-importance, high-interest coverage and would leverage the unparalleled expertise of CNN Weather to prioritize extreme weather news while also searching for weather stories that help illuminate and personalize the climate crisis - a story that touches all of CNN's audiences and all of our journalistic beats.
Your Role Accountabilities…
• You'll assign and edit stories in the breaking news space - urgent, rapidly updating digital coverage of hurricanes, tornado outbreaks, severe ice storms, life-threatening floods and more.
• You'll collaborate closely with CNN Weather's meteorologists to gather editorial and help build coverage plans for all platforms for major extreme weather events.
• You'll edit daily stories and news features from writers and correspondents on the Climate and Weather teams and elsewhere across CNN.
• You'll shape story ideas and angles around complex topics, serving as a partner to writers in identifying distinctive angles on top stories - and in helping to make good stories great.
• You'll work with the CNN Visuals team to help our audiences understand the impact of extreme weather and climate change through data-rich graphics, photos and video.
• You'll edit in formats that go beyond the traditional article - including newsletters; visual projects; explanatory work that helps audiences understand the news; and real-time breaking news posts.
• When a big story breaks, editors are often the point person to launch the first URL, keeping us sharp and fast on breaking news.
• You'll serve as a second set of eyes on alerts or on key pieces that need a good comb-through and/or creative punch.
• You'll work with writers to ensure that our stories, headlines, newsletters and social media posts are accurate and fair.
• You'll also assist on edits of daily and distinctive stories about the impact of the climate crisis and the race to transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy.
• CNN editors must be excellent communicators and diplomats. They are excellent providers of feedback who help elevate CNN's storytelling across a wide range of digital platforms.
• And last but never least: Editors are often the final step before a story goes to CNN's programming team to get distributed to millions of people worldwide; all news editors work intently to make sure our stories are accurate and fair so that we continue to grow the trust between CNN and our audiences.
Qualifications & Experience…
• A degree in meteorology, climate science or a related science field preferred.
• At least 5 years of digital editorial experience in the extreme weather or climate space.
• Experience editing fast-moving breaking news.
• Willingness to work outside the regular 9 to 5 during major weather events.
• Experience helping writers frame their stories for a national audience.
• A clear understanding of style and grammar.
• A college degree or equivalent.
