Job Description
The Deputy Editor's role is to serve as the right-hand to the Editorial Director, assisting in shaping and implementing content strategy, managing the day-to-day workflow of the team, and bringing thoughtful, compelling stories to life. They will manage five staff writers and be responsible for assigning, editing and publishing daily news stories as well as editing stories from across the team and freelancers as needed. They will focus on developing the editorial skillsets of the staff writers through hands-on support, constructive feedback, and guiding the team through every aspect of the editorial process. They will be instrumental in helping to ideate and execute on ambitious stories, tent poles, franchises and other editorial products. In partnership with the Editorial Director, they will ensure the smooth functioning of the team, including overseeing budget, contracting freelancers, and maintaining a daily publishing schedule.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
• Manage, lead and guide an ambitious team of writers
• Oversee and edit news and short-form content for the site
• Provide quality control for the team and proactively work to help its writers and editors hone their skills
• Stay on top of the latest news and trends and help news writers to uncover original, timely stories with fresh angles on a daily basis
• Guide team in every aspect of developing thoughtful, engaging storytelling, helping to bring stories from pitch to publication
• Use audience insights and data to inform editorial decisions
• Help the Editorial Director to develop and run innovative editorial franchises, tent poles, and other products
• Work in partnership with the Audience Development Director to oversee the national team's newsletters
• Help the Editorial Director to oversee budget, contract freelancers, and maintain a daily publishing schedule
• Work with the audience team, audio, video, and other editors across the Thrillist newsroom to elevate the work across mediums
• Help team to manage their time and hold them accountable to deadlines, while also working to make sure they have the tools and support they need to be successful
• Attend regular company-wide pitch meetings and brainstorms and contribute creative ideas with unique angles across multiple teams
• Use reporting tools (such as Google Analytics, Parsely, SEMRush, and custom dashboards) to analyze traffic and SEO data to inform strategy and decision making

WHO YOU ARE
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in digital media, including at least 2 years as an editor
• Bachelor's degree (journalism or online media a plus)
• Experience managing a team, inclusive of delegating responsibilities, managing performance, supporting growth and development, and providing meaningful feedback
• Strong reporting, writing, editing, and organizational skills
• Expert-level headline writing
• Sharp eye for beautiful imagery and photography for story packaging
• Knack for fact-checking and instinct for detecting questionable information
• Extensive knowledge of how internet news and travel content works and familiarity with the ever-changing digital media landscape
• Proficient in using and customizing data analytics tools, social media/trends monitoring platforms for a highly efficient workflow
• Comfort and aptitude for communicating with writers on your team, freelancers, and representatives across the department and beyond
• Ability to multitask and meet deadlines while juggling multiple projects

PAY TRANSPARENCY

The salary range listed below represents the minimum and maximum base pay for this position at the time of this posting. Final salary offered to the candidate selected for the position will be based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience.

$90,000 — $105,000 USD
