Job Description

Vulture is looking for a smart and observant writer who is obsessed with comedy to help expand and strengthen the coverage of our comedy section. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in comedy's many forms and outlets - from TV to movies to stand-up, sketch, podcasts, Twitter, and beyond - and steeped in the latest memes, trends, debates, and conversations taking place about comedy, the people who make it, and the industries that produce it. We're looking for someone who is excited to treat comedy as seriously as we do, brings a strong voice and fresh perspective to the section, and has an ability to spot a budding comedy news story five steps ahead of other outlets.

What you'll do:
• Help define our approach to comedy coverage - have a strong perspective on who and what we should cover (and how to do so), and identify opportunities for columns and other recurring features
• Pitch and write articles including interviews, essays, recommendations, reported features, trend pieces, and the various other formats that appear on Vulture, with a skill for crafting both serious and silly takes on the comedy world
• Write and produce our Splitsider comedy newsletter, infusing it with an appealing, accessible voice, valuable perspective, and a good amount of utility for comedy fans and creators alike
• Cover comedy news with a clear and distinctive (and, naturally, funny) voice while staying on top of industry conversations and developments
• Think about how to express our comedy coverage on mediums including social platforms, live events, video, and podcasts, and work with members of those teams to execute on your ideas

What you'll bring:
• 3+ years writing about comedy and/or pop culture - bonus points if you are entrenched in a local comedy scene or have comedian/industry contacts
• A solid grasp of how comedy works and how to write about it effectively, as well as strong ideas about how to expand and strengthen what we cover (and what we don't cover but should)
• Comfort and ability to work within the 24/7 news cycle
