Job Description

AI Reporter, The Verge (Full Time, Temporary)

The Verge is an ambitious multimedia effort founded in 2011 to examine how technology will change life in the future for a massive mainstream audience.

The Verge is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what's now, what's next, and what's possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

You'll help drive our coverage around artificial intelligence. As Hollywood grinds to a halt, the US stock market stalls, and seemingly every company, tech or otherwise, races to adopt language models and image generators, AI has become one of the most important beats of 2023. You'll break down the biggest AI concepts for our readers, deploy a healthy dose of skepticism to puncture excessive hype, and explore the ethics of this technology as well as the extraordinary outcomes it engenders. You'll work closely with our tech and policy editors to cover AI and the way it's transforming our world.

You responsibilities will include:
• Developing your beat with coverage from news hits to larger reports and analysis. Daily news writing is a must.
• Develop sources in the communities being affected by AI and with the companies and activists working for better AI policy, as well as people using AI tools.
• Proactively pitch news and analysis, and help vet stories around AI.
• Help us maintain our collaborative and ambitious team culture.

You're an eager reporter with experience on the AI beat, covering both technical and cultural knowledge. You know what the size of a language model's context window is measured in. You're familiar with the Shoggoth meme and takeoff timelines. You've covered some of the biggest players in the space, like OpenAI and Stability AI, but also know how to navigate the Discords and subreddits where developers are tinkering with leaked weights.

• Strong knowledge of artificial intelligence and AI policy.
• A growing roster of contacts in the AI community.
• Strong writing skills, including the ability to identify compelling angles and develop them effectively

In your cover letter, please describe what excites you most about covering AI.

If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We've hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
