Overview and Responsibilities

We're looking for a software architect to help guide and drive our Roku platform development. The Software Architect, Roku will lead a team of 2-4 Roku engineers, and will work in concert with project managers, product developers, designers, and brand producers to originate consumer-facing experiences and device-specific data feeds for the Roku platform. They will employ the latest technologies and methodologies to innovate our approach to emerging platform delivery and performance.

You will be responsible for the technical design, development, and implementation of high-quality software using BrightScript and the Scene Graph framework to run on the Roku streaming platform. Our ideal candidate will be proactive, an excellent communicator, and will work well in a collaborative Agile environment. They will act as an expert consulting resource providing technical leadership in multiple technology areas supporting the organization's connected TV architecture and will contribute to the future success of the business through innovations in streaming appliance technology. The ideal candidate for this role is a natural leader and has demonstrated a career of continued growth, growing technical influence and responsibility.

Responsibilities:
• Roku software development
• Understanding of the limitations of the platform and how to optimize the app to improve performance
• Work and collaborate in teams with developers, testers, product managers, etc.
• Work with the platform API team to advance app functionality
• Familiarity/comfort with Agile iterative development processes
• Aggregate task estimation and progress for all engineers, communicate this regularly to a project manager/scrum master
• Familiarity with Jira, Confluence tools
• Communicate with other subject areas and engineering leadership to acquire any information necessary to achievement of engineering objectives
• Commit to delivery of timely results
• Flexibility and ability to learn

Basic Qualifications
• 4+ years as a Roku developer
• Strong programming/web scripting skills including strong Roku debugging skills
• Proficiency with BrightScript and Scene Graph Framework:
• Deep understanding of threads in Scene Graph and how to optimize rendezvous between task thread and render thread
• Familiarity with Roku native UI components like rowList, markupList and markupGrid
• Roku Video Node familiarity, understanding of how to debug streaming related issues
• Experience with Test Driven Development
• Familiarity with Roku certification checklist and review process
• At least 2 years experience as an architect and team leader

Additional Qualifications
• Propose, review, and maintain key technical decisions, standards, practices, and policies
• Propose company-wide architecture and feature improvements
• Maintain an awareness of standard methodologies in the technology industry in general and Roku development in particular, and implement as appropriate
• Comfortable prioritizing and leading multiple initiatives and analyses, and in moving with speed through each
• Excellent leadership and influencing skills, able to set a vision and motivate multi-functional teams towards a common outcome while continually improving work procedures and processes
• Able to collaborate with various external teams to execute projects in a timely manner
• Mentor and guide, providing technical guidance and leadership necessary to accomplish work. Serve as a technical resource to those supervised
• Quantitative analytical strengths including business-focused analytical approaches and frameworks. Knowledge of Excel model development
• Strong written/verbal communication skills including executing hands-on analytics analysis. Experience creating quality user documentation/presentation materials
• Previous experience building applications for other OTT/Smart TV devices
• Experience performing load tests
• Experience with the development of Chromecast applications
• Experience with CI tools like Jenkins
• Participation and past success in hackathons
• Contributor to open source
