What part will you play?
The Writer, Race-Breaking & Trends covers race and cultural trends as a full-time beat. This role will report into the National Digital News Desk and partner closely with the beat leader, key teams in digital and in newsgathering. This Writer will be sourced enough to break news on his/her beat, nimble enough to identify and produce quick, contextual stories on race and its place in culture. This Writer will be plugged in enough to recognize when a cultural moment is about to gain momentum before it comes part of the national conversation. This Writer will have an understanding and passion for the ways in which race, culture and identity show up in our everyday lives and the reporting and writing skills to create distinctive content from these observations. This Writer will be a creative force who consistently pitches and executes distinctive coverage of race in America, to help us elevate the voices of Black, Latino, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American and all races to tell the stories of inequality, education, economy, health care, culture, entertainment, sports and other key topics that highlight solutions, inspiration and leadership.
The Writer, Race-Breaking & Trends will report, write, package and publish breaking news and quick takes on culture and trends that explore, explain and elevate the many ways that racial diversity plays out in our everyday lives. This Writer is a best in class shaper and sharpener of stories and ideas and a natural collaborator who can work across CNN's news platforms and teams in service of getting the best content to our vast audiences. She/He is a true partner in identifying distinctive angles on top stories and finding distinctive stories on the beat. The Writer must be skilled at breaking news reporting and writing and have a solid understanding of how to use social media to help identify trends, story ideas and credible sources.
What will you be doing?
This Writer will research and write breaking news and trends stories on race, ethnicity and inclusion. She/He will write with clarity, voice and context. This Writer will demonstrate a high pace of activity and deep curiosity about current events, issues and the diverse voices that define race in this country. She/He should show a high level of flexibility and the ability to juggle multiple tasks at once.
Idea generation is key. Nimbleness is key. This Writer will be asked to move from breaking news, to live blogging, to spot news coverage on any given day.
This is a varied job -- some days may be fast and furious as you work on a single and fast-flowing developing story, some days will be focused on reporting and producing a key sidebar or feature. You also will be a frequent collaborator with the Reporter on this beat and with others across the team who cover race for CNN.
What do we need from you?
• 3 or more years of related experience covering race and/or covering a high impact beat or a trends beat
• College degree preferred
• Excellent writing and storytelling skills
• An understanding of how to write for and frame stories for a digital audience
• Experience covering the issues, conversations and triumphs regarding race, ethnicity and bias.
• Ability to write and report breaking news on deadline
• Ability to spot emerging cultural trends
• Ability to generate distinctive story ideas and report and write them accurately
• Ability to collaborate across teams to produce content, brainstorm ideas and cover fast-breaking news
