The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in severe and regional weather patterns, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is confident working across a variety of platforms and locations.
This role also provides backup support during vacations, PTO, and severe weather events, serving as a key resource for local meteorologists and station teams. Scheduling flexibility is essential, including availability on mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities:

• Provide coverage across a range of shifts, including mornings, evenings, and weekends, as needed throughout the year.
• Apply deep knowledge of regional geography and weather dynamics to deliver localized forecasts quickly and effectively.
• Create engaging weather explainers and feature content that educates and informs viewers.
• Contribute to the evolution of our digital and streaming platforms with innovative content and ideas.
• Collaborate with other meteorologists and content teams across TEGNA to share insights, resources, and best practices.
Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field.
• Minimum of 10 years of on-air meteorology experience.
• Proven expertise in a wide range of severe weather conditions, including tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, snowstorms, and extreme cold.
• AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) or equivalent certification.
• Proficiency with weather graphics systems (The Weather Company/WSI) and digital publishing tools.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks under deadline pressure.
• Experience posting content to websites and social media; familiarity with newsroom and weather computer systems.
• Willingness to travel occasionally to cover major weather events or support other stations.
What We Offer:
• Access to advanced weather technology and resources.
• Opportunity to serve a broad audience across a variety of markets.
• A platform to showcase storytelling, creativity, and technical forecasting skills.
• Collaborative team culture and support across TEGNA stations.
Benefits:
TEGNA offers comprehensive benefits designed to safeguard the physical, mental and financial health of our employees and their families. TEGNA offers two medical plan options for full and part-time employees through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, as well as access to dental and eye care coverage; fertility, surrogacy and adoption assistance; disability and life insurance.
Our 401(k) program offers full, part-time and temporary employees the opportunity to contribute 1% - 80% of their pay on a pre-tax basis to TEGNA's 401(k). Contributions made up to the first 4% of pay are eligible for a 100% match from the company and are 100% vested from day one.
Regardless of participation in TEGNA medical plans, ALL employees and their eligible family members receive nine free virtual doctor's appointments with a physician through Teladoc, and 12 free annual therapy sessions with a licensed clinician through Spring Health.
TEGNA offers a generous Paid Time Off (PTO) benefit as well as nine paid holidays per year.
