KPNX, the TEGNA-owned NBC affiliate in Phoenix, AZ is seeking an Executive Producer of Investigations and Special Projects to oversee a team of journalists working on investigations and specialized coverage. This role is ideal for a passionate journalist committed to enterprising stories, following tips and using data journalism to dig into issues, expose wrongdoing and drive meaningful change in our community. This leader will oversee the production of high-impact investigative journalism that can influence lives and laws, ensuring our team delivers compelling, ethical, and accurate longform and daily content across our broadcast, online, streaming and social media platforms
Responsibilities:
• Oversee and guide a team of investigative reporters, producers, and photographers, fostering a culture of excellence, integrity, and collaboration
• Lead the research, development, and production of in-depth investigative stories, from inception to broadcast and digital publication
• Identify, prioritize, and pursue day turn and longform investigative story ideas that have the potential to reveal injustices, expose wrongdoing, and prompt positive change
• Ensure all reporting meets the highest standards of fairness, accuracy, and legal/ethical compliance
• Edit and approve scripts, packages, and digital content, maintaining consistency and quality across all investigative output
• Collaborate with newsroom leadership to align investigative priorities with station goals and audience needs
• Mentor and develop investigative staff, providing ongoing feedback, training, and support to maximize team performance
• Monitor industry trends and legal developments to keep the team at the forefront of investigative journalism best practices
• Represent KPNX in the community, building relationships with sources, advocacy groups, and public officials to support investigative efforts
Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field
• At least 5 years experience as an investigative journalist and newsroom leader
• Track record of quality journalism, high integrity, and ethical decision-making
• Experience using data , making records requests and handling legal issues
• Passion for growing journalists and fostering a creative, positive, and collaborative newsroom
• Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news, and changing events
• Strong organization, planning skills and the ability to work under constant time-sensitive deadlines
• Knowledge of AP ENPS, Edius, photojournalism, video editing, and content management systems a plus
