Job Description
WOI Local 5 is searching for a Content Editor to help in content gathering for all platforms. This person is the air traffic controller of the newsroom. The Content Editor is a highly competitive professional with a passion for breaking news and getting the story along with possessing strong journalistic judgment and developing institutional knowledge of Des Moines.
Responsibilities:
• Lead newsroom editorial meetings, develop and propose a daily news coverage plan
• Monitor phones, scanners, and social media for possible news stories
• Generate original stories, develop follow-ups, and keep a calendar to follow events and continuing coverage.
• Work closely with reporters, photographers, producers, and other staff members to assign and develop story ideas
• Be the main point of communication with reporters and producers on developing stories
• Develop new sources and maintain relationships with local agencies like law enforcement, elected leaders, courts, etc.
• Logistic, newsgathering, and big-picture planning for major events such as election coverage, severe weather, and breaking news
• Collaborate with affiliates to search trending content and publish compelling stories, photos, and video from our corporate network across web, mobile, and social platforms
• Collaborate with management to ensure proper staffing for must-cover events
Job Requirements:
• College degree or related job experience in lieu of degree acceptable
• Editorial judgment: quickly decides whether a story is newsworthy
• Interpersonal skills: form relationships with many contacts to help bring a story together
• Organizational skills: organize the logistics and track details of several stories and keep a schedule
• Institutional knowledge of Des Moines and Central Iowa is a plus
• Strong social media skills, including an active newshound presence on social platforms
• Knowledge of ENPS, BitCentral, Edius is a plus
• Be an active consumer of news to keep a pulse on national and local developments
