POSITION OVERVIEW
The Manager, Safety and Security is charged with developing and implementing effective strategies to mitigate workplace safety concerns and security risks. This position will also ensure compliance with related policies and practices across Sundance Institute.
Working closely under the Director, Production and Operations, the Manager develops the Institute's formal safety program and emergency operations plan, including a written plan that is routinely updated to meet evolving Institutional, safety, and security needs.
This full-time position is based within a commutable distance to Boulder, CO in order to work onsite in a hybrid capacity as needed throughout the year. Extended hours, including evenings and weekends and holidays will be required at key points. Travel to Institute offices and events may also be required on occasion.
Top priorities include but are not limited to:
• Collaborating with key stakeholders to develop the Institute's management strategy for safety and security, including the formal safety program and emergency operations plan to ensure operational continuity and the safety and security of all Festival attendees and films.
• Collaborating with internal departments to develop security, safety, and evacuation strategies for high-profile films, events, and the labs, including films with sensitive or politically-charged content.
• Developing and facilitating robust training on various operational procedures for internal and external constituents, including employees, volunteers, and vendors.
• Selecting, training, and managing highly skilled employees, delegating appropriate and meaningful work while providing direction, feedback, and support to ensure employees understand responsibilities and are effective in their roles.
• Conducting outreach in order to cultivate, maintain, and strengthen the Institute's Security Program through partnerships with local and federal organizations.
• Overseeing and managing the Incident Command Team and emergency communication procedures, including collaborating with communication vendors on procedures and protocols.
• Serving as the Festival representative with Park City's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during the 2026 Festival, and establishing processes and protocols for the future of this work in moving to Colorado.
• Managing an accurate and current security risk document to flag communications, lead and direct necessary responses, and track security risks.
• Partnering with Human Resources on individuals of concern, bridging safety and security concerns involving volunteers, contractors, consultants, vendors, advisors, participants, and employees.
• Acting as the main point of contact with external security teams, including vendors, and state and federal agencies, to address their concerns, implement protocols, and facilitate training on our internal protocols.
• Overseeing that all documentation regarding safety and security investigations from beginning through resolution are completed and final, collaborating with Finance, HR, Legal, and Operations as appropriate.
• Developing evacuation and emergency management procedures, projecting, and planning for lodging and space needs for residency programs.
• Ensuring operational documents are updated and deadlines are communicated to all stakeholders.
• Overseeing department expenses against allocated budget and working with budget manager's to sign off on all invoices so payments can be processed in a timely manner.
• Communicating clear and established policies, protocols, and processes.
You have the following direct or transferable skill sets:
• 4 years of progressively responsible risk management experience.
• Leadership skills with a background that includes demonstrated excellence in managing employees.
• Ability to facilitate the resolution of complex problems impacting people and programs.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to operate independently where appropriate, and understand when to escalate issues.
• Capacity to effectively address and manage safety and security issues affecting patrons, volunteers, artists, and employees.
• Strong consultation, presentation, meeting design, and facilitation skills.
• Excellent discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Skilled in project management, including the ability to manage and prioritize the resources and tasks required to support simultaneous deliverables and delivery dates.
• Valid driver's license and ability to pass MVR authorization check.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States.
You will be successful in this role if you:
• Effectively develop and implement safety and emergency plans.
• Create and continuously improve a formal safety program and emergency operations plan that ensures operational continuity and the safety of all stakeholders, particularly during the Sundance Film Festival, which includes updated plans, clear protocols, and tracks staff compliance.
• Build robust partnerships across departments and with external agencies (e.g., law enforcement, emergency services), resulting in effective coordination during events and emergencies.
• Ensure operational readiness and successful incident management.
• Lead the Incident Command Team and manage emergency communications to ensure the organization is well-prepared for various scenarios.
• Manage incidents with minimal disruption, and post-incident reports show thorough documentation and resolution.
• Ensure that internal staff and vendors are thoroughly trained, protocols are well-understood, and teams are effectively supported to reduce the number of safety/security incidents that occur.

*Final rate of pay is determined based on the applicant's geographic location, relevant experience and skills, and internal equity among similar positions within our organization.
