POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director, Institutional Giving is charged with leading our foundation and government fundraising efforts, and is responsible for an annual revenue goal of $11+ million. Managing a team of three, this position has oversight of renewal strategy, prospect development, and multi-year planning for this area. In keeping with the diverse range of issue areas the Institute addresses with the support of our donors, this role will guide and lead their team in describing our work through a variety of frameworks including arts and culture, equity and inclusion, social and racial justice, science, environment, economic development, and more.

Working closely under the Director of Development, this position supports Sundance Institute’s commitment to attracting, retaining, and engaging mission and values aligned foundation and government partnerships to support our work through financial contributions and otherwise.

This position works full-time and extended hours, including mornings, evenings, and weekends at key points throughout the year. Occasional travel to Institute offices and events will also be required.

Top priorities include but are not limited to…
• Developing Sundance Institute’s strategy for foundation and government giving, ensuring thorough and accurate evaluation of the financial viability and alignment of new funding opportunities with our mission, programs, and initiatives.
• Leading identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategy for Sundance Institute’s foundation and government giving to secure an average of $11M in annual and multi-year grants that support immediate and long-term institute goals.
• Cultivating new and maintaining established relationships with a diverse portfolio of local, national, and international funding organizations.
• Actively contributing as a senior team member and strategist to meet strategic goals and to partner and foster collaboration across program leadership and the Finance Department.
• Managing and mentoring a team, including selecting and training highly effective employees, providing direction, feedback, and support to ensure employees understand responsibilities and are effective in their roles, and delegating appropriate and meaningful work.
• Overseeing foundation and government donor Festival activations and ensuring proper representation at programs and events.
• Managing department timelines and deadlines related to the Festival across multiple departments and stakeholders while ensuring adherence to procedures.
• Developing and ensuring compliance with foundation and government recognition and stewardship policies.
• Partnering with the Development Operations Manager to lead all facets of foundation and government data collection, accuracy, and relevance, including oversight of reporting systems and revenue projections.
• Working collaboratively to meet or exceed an annual contributed revenue goal and actively participating in the revenue planning process.
• Managing all small, midsize, and select major grants for the foundations and government fundraising portfolio.
• Managing local community grants including County, City, and Community Foundations, ensuring that grant applications meet deadlines, metrics are tracked, recognition materials are compiled, and evaluations are completed.
• Overseeing processes to ensure prospect and donor information is accurately maintained and stored in files and the department database.

You have the following direct or transferable skill sets:
• Legal authorization to work in the United States.
• 10 years of cultivating and leading institutional and government-giving programs that successfully meet or exceed revenue goals.
• Strong leadership and management skills, with demonstrated experience leading teams and inspiring them to achieve new benchmarks of success and recruiting.
• Experience with grant writing.
• A comfortable accomplished front-line fundraiser able to solicit gifts at a leadership level.
• Deep knowledge of advancement best practices in areas of fundraising.
• Demonstrated ability to strategize, set, and meet goals.
• Genuine passion for and excitement about Sundance Institute’s nonprofit mission, and a culture defined by collaboration, curiosity, and creativity.
• Well-developed communication and presentation skills—ability to express a creative vision that effectively promotes the Institute’s diverse efforts and is clear and inspiring to all.

• Lead the Foundations team in reaching or exceeding their annual contributed revenue goal.
• Identify new prospects and build and implement successful strategies to raise new funds from these constituents.
