Role Overview:An outstanding opportunity at Sony Interactive Entertainment to offer legal support across APAC. The Senior Corporate Counsel will focus on legal matters in 4-5 markets, supporting channel sales, digital distribution, and business operations. Responsibilities include handling consumer law issues and providing regulatory advice for the PlayStation Store and live services business.
What you'll be doing:
Provide transactional support and counseling to a broad range of SIE business functions in APAC, including:
• Collaborate with the Legal Director and other team members to advise and assist business teams in managing risk and driving growth in the Asia-Pacific region. Focus on 4-5 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and potentially Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, or Vietnam.
• Providing general legal advice on corporate and commercial activities, including day-to-day business operations, sales, distribution, marketing, advertising, consumer matters, vendor engagement and regulatory matters, among others.
• Review, draft and negotiate business agreements and legal documents in support of all lines of business, including procurement, new business initiatives and program rollouts.
• Lead and respond to inquiries or investigations by regulators, with internal teams and outside counsel where required.
• Be a strategic partner to business, operational and functional support teams.
• Work closely with SIE's Legal Director, APAC on direction and strategy as part of the legal department's regional support for APAC.
• Provide legal counsel on a range of subjects to legal teams worldwide in need of regional legal perspectives for global product launches, marketing materials, blogs, packaging, and other initiatives introduced on the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Network.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues in the legal department to standardize and simplify processes and systems in the APAC region.
• Supervise and potentially lead members of the APAC legal team.
• Provide legal training to sales, marketing and operations teams.
• Lead outside counsel.
• Supervise regulatory developments in your assigned countries and provide legal analysis and compliance recommendations with such laws.
• Assist to drive or lead key legal activities either at an APAC or country level.
• Directly undertake or help to drive regional projects from time to time.
• Ability to become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in 1-2 areas while managing a broader remit.
What we're looking for:
• Law graduate with a license to practice law in Australia, Singapore, England or another common law jurisdiction. Must be well-versed in consumer laws for Australia and New Zealand.
• Minimum 12 years' experience practicing law either in an in-house corporate legal department, top-tier law firm or a combination of both.
• Familiarity with ACCC guidelines on consumer matters, white goods, and online safety issues.
• Experience providing legal support for consumer electronics sales (physical and e-sales) and hardware distribution in the ANZ/APAC region.
• A keen eye for detail – precision, accuracy, and very good attention to detail are essential.
• A motivated, reliable, focused, self-starter who thinks and works proactively and cross-functionally and is effective at working and solving problems collaboratively with other collaborators.
• Excellent drafting and negotiation skills in at English.
• Excellent communicator possessing excellent interpersonal skills.
• Experience providing legal support to sales and marketing organizations in the APAC region.
• Ability to lead and support projects across multiple geographies and subject matters.
• Ability to think and negotiate creatively and optimally, balancing legal constraints with business goals and objectives.
• Excellent decision-making skills and ability to identify and prioritize the highest impact initiatives and driving them to pragmatic resolution.
Desired Qualities and Experience:
• Combination of in-house and law firm practice experience in the APAC office of a top law firm.
• Ability to speak multiple languages relevant to APAC.
• Experience working closely with senior business management.
• Previous experience in a highly matrixed organization.
• Able to work in a highly engaged team distributed across multiple time zones and cultures.
