The Crown Publishing Group seeks a Production Editorial Assistant to join the Crown, Clarkson Potter, and Ten Speed Press imprints team. Crown is renowned as the go-to publisher of narrative and idea-driven nonfiction. As the preferred publisher of presidents and celebrities, Crown is responsible for some of the most high-profile publications of our time, including Michelle Obama's Becoming, Susan Cain's Quiet, Matthew McConaughey's Greenlights, Matthew Desmond's Evicted, and Erik Larson's The Splendid and the Vile. Clarkson Potter and Ten Speed Press publish today's most influential and innovative voices in the cooking, drinks, pop culture, and lifestyle categories, and are the home of such celebrated voices as Ina Garten, Gina Homolka, Yotam Ottolenghi, Tieghan Gerard, Marie Kondo, and Claire Saffitz.
Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Production Editorial Assistant will work closely with the production team on reprint corrections, help with paperback conversions, and assist in handling a variety of titles, including some original titles, from manuscript to bound book.

If you can handle the details of immediately urgent tasks but also remember to step back, consider the big picture, and adjust your strategy when needed, you'll assume greater production editorial responsibilities over time.

The Role:
• Copyedit setting text of cover/jacket copy using Track Changes in Microsoft Word and review design covers and jackets as backup for the production editorial department.
• Manage a group of reprint titles, working with the reprint production team; copyediting, proofreading, and production editing as needed; working with the design department to coordinate paperback cover routing.
• Prepare manuscripts for Design by styling text in Microsoft Word according to a PRH template and house guidelines.
• Prepare sample pages and design dupes at manuscript stage for Design.
• Assist in late-stage passes of book interiors, including slugging corrections.
• Production edit paperback conversions, including copyediting and proofreading new material and managing the routing of the covers.
• Assist department directors with vetting new freelance copy editors and proofreaders; adding new freelancers to a database; managing new-freelancer paperwork.
• Assist department directors with light administrative tasks.
The Essentials:
• Strong copyediting/proofreading/fact-checking skills, completion of a copyediting course a plus
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, including Track Changes and other electronic editing skills; familiarity with Excel a plus
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Self-motivated team player with good critical thinking skills
• Familiarity with the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Chicago Manual of Style
• Familiarity with current issues surrounding the use of inclusive language is a plus
The salary for this position is $48,000. Full-time employees are eligible for our comprehensive benefits program.
