Editorial Assistant, Ballantine (Hybrid)
Founded in 1925, Random House is the proud publishing house of the world's most acclaimed storytellers, thought leaders, and innovators. Our host of imprints-including Ballantine, Bantam, Delacorte, Del Rey, The Dial Press, Harmony, Hogarth, One World, and Random House-publish fiction and nonfiction in all formats with the mission to entertain, educate, and inspire readers.
We are currently seeking an Editorial Assistant join the Ballantine imprint. The assistant will support the publisher on a list of general fiction and nonfiction. Ballantine's fiction program publishes at the intersection of quality and commercial, across genres such as book club fiction, historical fiction, women's fiction, suspense/thrillers, and speculative fiction. Ballantine's nonfiction program publishes popular narrative and platform-driven books across categories such as autobiography, self-help, history, popular psychology and business, and memoir.
Responsibilities:
• Providing administrative support, such as tracking deadlines, organizing and scheduling meetings, filing expense reports, routing author payments, executing mailings, and drafting contract proposals, as well as support for administrative responsibilities related to heading the editorial department.
• Evaluating proposals and manuscripts, logging submissions, and drafting rejection letters.
• Transmitting manuscripts to production and liaising with authors, publishers, agents, and the managing editorial department to coordinate and keep track of production process from finished manuscript to bound book.
• Preparing title information sheets, cover copy, profit & loss documents, and competitive title and trend research as needed.
This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities in the New York City office, which will include but not be limited to executing mailings and participating in and contributing to in-person meetings approximately two days a week. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our office in Manhattan.
The ideal candidate will have:
• A passion for reading a wide array of book club fiction and popular nonfiction across categories, as well as a keen interest in what type of books and stories readers enjoy in the genres Ballantine publishes.
• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
• A team player mentality and the ability to build internal & external relationships with departments, authors, agents, and other stakeholders.
• Exceptional attention to detail and outstanding follow-up, organizational, and multitask skills.
• Ability to take initiative and problem solve creatively and professionally in a fast-paced office environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
The salary for this position is $48,000. All positions are currently eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
