The Random House Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House, seeks an Assistant Managing Editor to join its team. This role will provide administrative and managing editorial support for an impressive list of fiction and nonfiction. The position offers the potential for growth in a fast-paced and highly collaborative team, as well as an opportunity to learn about the overall managing editorial process and the inner workings of a publishing office.
Daily responsibilities include all-around project support for various imprint lists across the Random House Group gamut, including Del Rey, Random House, Harmony, Rodale, Convergent, WaterBrook, Dial, and more. The Managing Editorial department sets and tracks schedules for manuscripts, cover design, and marketing materials to ensure that each manuscript becomes a finished book, while considering and anticipating the needs of various departments to negotiate a process that works for everyone. Uniquely placed at the intersection of many different teams across RHPG, the Assistant Managing Editor will route materials and act as a point of contact with departments, including but not limited to editorial, production, design, marketing, sales, and publicity.

The candidate will manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently and effectively and is comfortable asking for help when needed.

The Role:
• Routing and tracking jacket and cover copy materials to other departments for approval and maintaining due dates
• Serving as a liaison between the editorial, publishing, production, publicity, marketing, contracts, sales, and operations departments
• Providing deadlines to editorial for production and sales materials
• Reviewing titles up for reprint and compiling lists of cover and text corrections needed
• Approving and facilitating file requests for editorial, marketing, publicity, and others as requested
• Updating data, including ISBNS, BISACs, on-sale dates, interior art, and more, in SAP and FileMaker Pro
• Creating and distributing various weekly/monthly reports
• Scheduling span meetings with editorial, and providing materials and agendas
• Providing general administrative support to the Managing Editorial department, backing up colleagues, and assisting with special projects as needed
The Essentials:
• A strong history of working with metadata, title schedule management, and/or reprint corrections in trade or academic publishing is preferred
• Exceptional attention to detail, proofreading skills, the ability to prioritize, and strong follow-up skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and meet deadlines, take initiative, and problem-solve creatively
• A team player with the ability to build relationships with other departments. A collaborative spirit is essential.
• Superb organizational and time management skills
• Outstanding ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
• Solutions-focused when met with challenges and can comfortably adapt to changes and anticipate needs when needed once familiar with the role
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
• Familiarity with FileMaker Pro, Lytho, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and/or SAP a plus
• Previous copyediting experience preferred
The salary for the Assistant Managing Editor is $53,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
