Job Description
Kokila (pronounced KO-ki-la) publishes literature for children and young adults across all formats and genres. As a new and quickly growing imprint within Penguin Random House we bring together an inclusive community of authors and illustrators, publishing professionals, and readers to examine and celebrate stories that reflect the richness of our world.

By centering stories from traditionally underrepresented voices and making space for storytellers to explore the full range of their experiences, we deliver books that inspire and entertain readers, and add nuance and depth to the way children and young adults see the world and their place in it.

The Essentials:

As our publishing team grows and we publish more books a year, we are excited to add a Design Assistant to our art team. You will report to the Art Director to provide administrative and design support all while coordinating requests from various departments, agents, authors, and illustrators. Having strong working knowledge of the full Adobe Suite will support you in successfully managing various design projects

We are looking for a candidate with an express interest in representation and inclusivity in media and in social justice issues. At Kokila, we hold a strong belief in the power of inclusive stories to nourish and shape young minds and the society we live in.

With this in mind, to be successful in this role we feel that you'll need to have:
• Great organizational skills, collaborative, good communication skills, especially as you liaise with various teams
• Interest in examining questions of representation, inclusion, and equity in publishing and our society at large
• Strong ability to manage competing priorities and prioritize your work
• Evidenced ability to manage communication and workflow in a proactive manner
• Design portfolio available to share at interview stage

TASKS:
• Proofread internal passes of books and make changes within the layouts
• Typeset interior pages of novels
• Assist with creating social media assets, including still and animated materials
• Act as a liaison on behalf of art director with other departments or individuals to set up meetings and share requested design materials
• Archive books as they are finalized
• Upload covers and interior assets to internal systems
• Make all reprint changes and prepare those files for production
• Support with billing, contracts, and other clerical tasks

SKILLS:
• Adobe desktop publishing suite: Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects
