Assistant Director, Programming (Hybrid)

Position Overview:

The Assistant Director, Programming is a key member of the Programming team, serving as a critically important PBS liaison, among producers, GA Programming, and internal stakeholders. This individual is responsible for cultivating relationships with content providers and guiding them through PBS delivery, standards and distribution expectations, coordinating deliverables, maintaining schedules, as well as providing editorial feedback in partnership with editorial leads.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• Act as project manager for slate of programs and projects, and will establish and maintain project framework, production schedules and milestones; coordinate appropriate meetings with key staff and outside partners, as well as oversee project-specific work of senior program associate(s)

• Guide communications between producers and PBS Programming, Content Services, Program Business Affairs, Standards & Practices, Multiplatform Marketing, PBS Digital, Publicity and other internal concerns

• Proactively follow-through on all key project deliverables to ensure timely receipt of assets for on-air and promotional opportunities

• Work with senior editorial team on content review and editorial development

• Screen programs in production for compliance issues and create flag reports for producers and internal departments

• Oversee timely and proper preparation of titles for distribution

• Assist Programming team in identification and preparation of materials for internal and external presentations

Requirements for success:
• Three to five years' experience in television production and programming

• Bachelor's degree in communications or related field with experience in a public broadcasting environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience

• Familiarity with public television programming

• Experience negotiating with producers on the subject of deliverables and other matters related to broadcast

• Experience working in film/video production, post-production and final finishing capacities from technical, managerial and editorial perspectives

• Experience working directly in an editorial capacity to develop and review program content

• Experience with identifying and evaluating sensitive or problematic material in programs

• Knowledge of public television guidelines and practices in regard to program distribution is a plus

• General knowledge of content development and production

• Excellent communication and follow-up skills and are capable of working on multiple projects in various stages of production in an extremely fast-paced environment

• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow through proactively on projects until completion

• Ability to work under stressful circumstances, react to change productively, and handle other duties as assigned.

• Excellent writing and editing skills

• Strong analytical skills

• Understanding of PBS guidelines and industry practices with respect to broadcast production is desirable

• Familiarity with PBS operations and procedures is desirable
