Building on the work NPR has already done to create loyal listeners and viewers, the position of Visuals Community Manager will help NPR move our organization in the direction of deeper, more meaningful interactions with our audience.

This visuals community manager will help create engage with NPR communities on visual platforms. This visuals community manager will accomplish this by working with audiences on Instagram, TikTok and Youtube. They will create positive engagement in comments with the audience, collaborate with video producers and visuals editors to find new visual story ideas from the audience and monitor comments for cyber harassment and bullying. They will help filter the firehose of content coming from visual platform, chatrooms and dark web.

The goal is to foster authentic connections and conversations that can help inform the work of NPR and enrich the lives of our community while protecting our journalists on these platforms.

The Visuals Community Manager will report to Deputy Director, NPR Visuals.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Working under the guidance of the Deputy Director, NPR Visuals monitor comments on Instagram, TikTok and Youtube for cyber harassment and bullying.
• Partner with NPR's Director of security to pilot a software that will monitor:
• threats to our journalists, including cyber harassment and cyberbullying.
• security risks in places/at events where our journalists need to go (eg political conventions, protests)
• security risks posed to our journalists by extremist groups or other potentially dangerous actors.
• Focus on short form video project and develop community with our audience.
• Work with video producers and visuals editors to find story ideas pitched from our audience
• Initiate discussions and get community members talking.
• Foster positive audience engagement on visuals platforms.
• Meet with video production teams weekly to report on what conversations you are seeing. Learn about upcoming topics to be covered in video series.
• Develop best practices for audience engagement on visuals platforms.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Minimum education experience, required or preferred. (Ex: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience)

This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.

REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least five years of experience managing a digital community for a national media brand.
• At least five years of experience in daily journalism (digital, print and/or broadcast)
• At least two years' experience with managing branded social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
• Has a deep understanding of the security and privacy pitfalls and ways in which social visual platforms can be used for cyber harassment and bullying.
• Demonstrated skills in writing and editing
• Highly organized
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure
• Strong understanding of journalistic ethics. Experience maintaining high journalistic ethics and standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Experience with intellectual property issues involved in publications generally and Web publications in particular
• Strong oral communication skills
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts as needed, including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays. Some holiday shifts will be required
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public media system
• Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
• Cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace culture

This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum annualized salary for this position is $95,000.
