Job Description

Across our organization, we’re building a workplace where collaboration is essential, diverse voices are heard, and inclusion is the key to our success.

Can you explain what’s going on in the economy right now with clarity, brevity, wit and maybe even some pathos? In under 10 minutes? Of course not. Nobody can. But at The Indicator from Planet Money we take a stab at a different slice of that in short, accessible doses each day. We’re a small, extremely collaborative and tight-knit team with broad creative freedom to tell stories however we can – sometimes it’s a sympathetic character narrative, or maybe field reporting or humor, or whatever else we can dream up. We’ve built a large, devoted, audience who count on us. Now we’re looking for an editor we can count on to spot stories, sharpen scripts and set a coverage agenda along with us.

We aim to cover and represent the breadth of economic realities. Our show is built on the taste, observations, curiosity and insight of our staff, as such, we put a high value on the diversity of lived experiences among our staff. That’s what leads to our best and most accurate coverage. People from all races, genders, identities are encouraged to apply.

• Set the editorial agenda along with hosts
• Spot stories and news
• Ensure every episode meets our high standards for craft, journalism, and tone and substance
• Edit episodes, quickly, decisively, with insight, rigor and kindness
• Re-writing stories along with hosts as needed, including restructuring interviews, sharpening narration, punching up jokes, trimming episodes to time.
• Approving or rejecting story pitches from staff and freelancers
• Potentially co-hosting episodes
• Participating in our collaborative group edit process
• Guiding reporters about what scenes, information and tape to gather in the field
• Offering direct, critical feedback with kindness, consideration, collegiality
• Embody the team values of kindness, consideration, empathy, inclusivity, diversity, and equity.
• Keeping it fun
• *** This job MAY be a supervisory role. Do you want that? Do you NOT want that? Let’s discuss. ***

Who should apply?
• Because …
• You can take an idea and sculpt it into a clear structure.
• You do not shy away from complicated ideas or topics.
• You find characters and stories everywhere.
• At the proverbial cocktail party, or chatting on the line at the DMV, you find yourself saying, “wait, go back. Tell me more about THAT.

• Maybe you’ve covered econ, or business, or studied it, or worked up close to it.
• But you other interests and like talking about things like arcs and stakes and pacing and agents.
• You know how to make an audience feel something.
• You often ask, “Why should I care?”
• You are skeptical, but still idealistic. Serious but funny. Warm but also fierce when it is called for.
• You are editing this posting right now.
• Tell us what you love about what we do and why you want to join an exceptionally talented team at a key moment in our history. Tell us how you’d edit The Indicator. Tell us what we’re not doing that we should be doing. Tell us how you would change our style. Tell us how to use bullet points properly. Tell us which voices we’re missing and show us the topics we’re overlooking. We are wide open.
