Job Description
Across our organization, we're building a workplace where collaboration is essential, diverse voices are heard, and inclusion is the key to our success.
OVERVIEW

The Supervising Editor for Weekends is a mission-critical role. Joined at the hip with the weekend deputy managing editor, this leader will decide what stories to cover on our digital platforms -- and how. They will direct a team of editors (story and home page) and reporters. They will also oversee social and NPR One staff during those hours.

The role requires impeccable news judgment. It requires someone who can multitask effortlessly, manage efficiently, and nurture and grow their team's career aspirations effectively. It is also expected that the leader will cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace environment.

Content creation: The weekend is a particularly active one for NPR's digital audience. This leader will capitalize on that interest to grow our base and make inroads into communities where we want a bigger presence.

Therefore, this role requires the leader to act in the moment -- whipping up a live blog as needed, pivoting reporters from assigned stories -- all the while keeping an eye on Chartbeat, Twitter, Reddit, CrowdTangle and other signals to ensure we are staying competitive, and covering the right stories in the right way.

Another big part of the role is to possess editorial ingenuity: to find angles (and sources) to tell the stories that can be constructed on the weekends - all the while keeping in mind our North Star of reaching a diverse audience.

Curation: A second critical component of this role is how we present the stories we create: what should we alert, when and where; how can we dream up social native stories. This leader will ensure that our apps are reflecting the latest NPR content of the moment and highlighting the best pieces from our member stations.

Collaboration: This is a senior leadership role, who will consult with other senior leaders to determine -- and deliver -- on our priorities. This leader must be able to model flexible management in sync with leaders of teams overseeing other dayparts -- whether in specific intra-day story editing or longer term decision-making about staffing and schedules. Often, this role might be asked to edit scripts -- and they should be comfortable and versed to do so.

Coaching and management: The supervising editor will be tasked with setting goals (both short and long term) for their team members -- so that the leadership team can work on roadmaps to offer the team growth and career opportunities. This is a prime role for someone who has shown leadership promise to act on that potential, and in the process, cultivate and nurture a cohesive, content and competitive team.
