OVERVIEW
NPR's flagship morning show and podcast are looking for a skilled digital journalist to define and shape its online presence. The Social Media & Digital Writer is responsible for creating accurate, timely, engaging content for the Morning Edition Liveblog and social media platforms. The Liveblog and social presence complements and extends the sensibility of our broadcast show for NPR's digital audiences. The ideal person for this role has strong news judgment and can multitask effortlessly. They can act in the moment -- pivoting, as news demands, from a general-interest blog to a topic-specific one. NPR is committed to meeting our audience wherever they are, and the Morning Edition Social Media and Digital Strategist is a vital part of that mission.
This shift works 5:00 am to 2:00 pm ET, Monday through Friday.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Write for the web & social with speed, accuracy, voice, nuance and curiosity
• Tackle multiple short web and social posts daily, all written conversationally and with a digital audience in mind
• Show flexibility in priorities and subject matter under tight deadlines. You could be covering everything from international news to major cultural events in the US
• Collaborate regularly with colleagues across broadcast and digital news to make sure our reporting is properly vetted and presented on the blog
• Ensure that all posts meet NPR News standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness, honesty and impartiality
• Develop and share social best practices with the Morning Edition staff
• Handle shifts as assigned, including weekends and holidays, working on deadline and under pressure
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in journalism, or a writing-intensive discipline (or the equivalent combination of education and experience)
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Experience managing digital and/or social media channels for a major news/media brand and demonstrated ability to participate in, contribute to and grow online communities.
• Strong communication skills
• Quality decision making and attention to detail
• Familiarity with navigating a variety of content management systems
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts and alter schedule as needed
• Ability to document internal processes and analyze audience data
• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
• Ability to both work independently and collaborate with others
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Familiarity with social video and digital video editing production
This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum salary for this position is $60,000.00
