NPR is seeking a highly-skilled and creative veteran journalist to serve as Senior Editor for Weekend Edition and for the weekend version of Up First, NPR's daily news podcast. Weekends are special, and NPR's Weekend Edition digs in to the news of the week with a distinctive, thoughtful approach.

The Senior Editor is part of Weekend Edition's leadership team and will guide coverage of the news while ensuring the program meets NPR's standards for accuracy, fairness and balance. The Senior Editor is an ''idea whisperer,'' working closely with hosts and production staff to help hone and polish story ideas for air. If you are a journalist with a minimum of ten years' experience who wants to help NPR's weekend audience make sense of the news and hear new perspectives, and are a writer with flair and accuracy, the Weekend Edition Senior Editor job is for you!

This position is based in Washington, DC, and may require occasional travel.

The ideal candidate for this position will believe deeply in the responsibility of public service journalism. They will have a capacity and passion for mentoring staff at all skill levels, and will thrive in a deadline-driven and collaborative environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Tracks ongoing flow of news and recommends specific stories and areas of coverage
• Develops timely, original program content for Weekend Edition, actively pitching forward-looking stories, with the ability to turn on an aggressive deadline
• Works with hosts and other contributors to determine the proper approach to stories, subjects to be discussed and highlighted, and individuals to be interviewed
• Takes the lead in executing major projects, working closely with show and newsroom colleagues to serve broadcast, podcast and digital audiences
• Regularly rotates into Line Editor role, guiding the shape over the overall show as well as taking responsibility for the editorial integrity and quality of the final broadcast/published product
• Actively provides editorial guidance, mentoring and feedback to colleagues

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Minimum education experience: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in national journalism/news

REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least 10 years of experience as a journalist in broadcast/audio news
• At least 5 years of experience leading/mentoring staff
• Proven experience maintaining high journalistic standards on multiple projects simultaneously, under stringent deadlines and changing priorities/conditions
• Demonstrated ability to work as a decisive leader, as well as a collaborative team member
• Thorough knowledge of news and feature reporting techniques and demonstrated writing ability.
• Considerable skill in both news and feature editing.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
• Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer

PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience communicating with NPR Newsroom and other internal stakeholders, in order to effectively oversee team interactions within NPR
• Experience with audio production: understanding of story pacing, audio edit quality, and use of scoring when appropriate
