NPR is seeking a Producer with substantial journalism experience to join its flagship morning show, Morning Edition.

The Producer II/III plays a leading role in bringing the show to air and helps shape its in depth reporting. This position rotates through a variety of shifts and roles. When supporting the live show, the Producer II/III leads a team of producers, serving as a last line of quality control on all audio before it goes to air. They must be nimble, flexible, cool-headed and ready to pivot with programming changes and news that breaks. They also help keep the live show updated throughout the course of the morning.

An indispensable producer can help turn a good show segment into a great one by suggesting additional audio, line edits, scoring or pace control. The ideal candidate has field reporting and producing experience, and is able to travel with Morning Edition's hosts and staff to bring distinctive reporting and broadcasts to the show. They are also keen on innovation and experimentation with new platforms and formats such as digital, social or live events.

The right candidate for this position is interested in daily news and is eager to deliver the freshest, most important stories to listeners to start their day. They should also want to understand the needs and wants of various audiences.

Morning Edition is a 24/6 news operation. Candidates must be able to work a variety of shifts, including dayside, overnight, late or swing shifts on a rotational basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Works with Line Editor and/or Supervisor to keep the daily show at the sharp edge of evolving news stories
• Rotates onto overnight and early morning shifts, often in a shift leader capacity for the live show
• Works in conjunction with show managers to make assignments and provide guidance to production staff
• Can write copy with minimal supervision and direction
• Plans and produces program material for next day and future shows
• Must be flexible to work all rotations at Morning Edition as required
• Travels with show hosts, producers, editors and/or reports to produce stories from the field and execute live broadcasts of the show from remote locations
• Other duties as assigned
• Books, scripts and produces show segments as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or writing-intensive discipline and/or equivalent work experience.

WORK LOCATION: This is an onsite role at our DC Headquarters office with hybrid work permitted.

REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least eight years of experience as a reporter, editor, or producer
• Experience producing live and breaking coverage
• Expertise in producing feature stories that include ambient or natural sound, music and archive tape.
• Radio broadcast production experience.
• At least two years of experience in editorial decision-making
• Well-developed curiosity in a wide range of subjects
• Ability and willingness to work off-hours shifts, including very early mornings, over nights, weekends and/or holidays.
• Experience assigning staff, especially under deadline pressure
• Demonstrated ability to generate and execute complex creative ideas, to assimilate and organize large amounts of information
• Strong oral communication skills.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the SAG-AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.

PREFERRED SKILLS
• Knowledge of advanced audio production and mixing techniques.
• Experience with the type of audio production protocols and systems used at NPR.
• Experience working on a live news program
• Proficiency in another language other than English
• Digital new production experience such as writing copy or producing content for digital platforms
• Excellent audio and broadcasting writing skills.
• Problem solving skills

This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum annualized salary for this position is $90,000
