The Managing Editor Standards and Practices + Leadership Development will have a broad leadership profile in the newsroom, reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of News. In this role, you’ll develop and lead a standards and practices advisory team in the newsroom, which will tackle many of the day to day ethical and reporting issues that arise throughout the news cycle. In partnership with our Human Resources – Talent Acquisition team, you’ll also lead efforts to develop and source top talent into the NPR newsroom, with an emphasis on diversity & inclusion in our leadership

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop and lead a team of key newsroom journalists who will serve as our Standards and Practices Board to respond to ethical issues, corrections, sponsorship questions, etc.
• Occasionally represent NPR to member stations or at events regarding journalism standards and ethics.
• Partner with NPR newsgathering and on air programming leaders, to develop a pool of future candidates for NPR leadership jobs. Assist in sourcing and recruiting for key hires, while adhering to best industry practices.
• Develop and maintain relations with NPR member stations newsrooms.
• Serve as a rotating leadership editor, running the newsroom in the absence of other key leaders, and joining a weekend rotation of editors who advise and guide big stories that break off hours.
• Guide and mentor key reports on journalism-related issues, stories, hiring personnel management, etc.
• Provide regular and constructive feedback and career development for performance evaluations.
• Lead NPR’s efforts to create a diverse hiring pipeline and develop leaders within the newsroom.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Minimum education experience, required or preferred. (Ex: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience)
• 10+ years of journalism experience delivering to multiple platforms, preferably at the national level
• 10+ years of supervisory and managerial experience leading teams through major stories, and complex coverage areas
• 5+ years recruiting and hiring for journalism teams, with track record of hiring and developing diverse teams
• Demonstrated excellence navigating the terrain of ethical questions that regularly arise regarding broadcast, digital content, podcasts, and social media
• Ability to lead and collaborate in a highly matrixed organization
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions

PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience editing for radio preferred
• Familiarity with NPR member stations and public media system preferred
