Love NPR? Love breaking news? Love great storytelling? Want to be part of the journalistic team putting on Morning Edition and Up First every day? Morning Edition is seeking a skilled, creative journalist to become a member of the Morning Edition team. The Editor develops timely, original content for Morning Edition – for broadcast and online. The Editor writes and edits scripts for broadcast and updates breaking news, and plans for corresponding coverage across all platforms. They manage large packages, projects and initiatives such as series and host field trips. The Editor provides editorial support for Morning Edition's hosts in preparing for interviews. A Morning Edition Editor must be available to rotate into a variety of shifts, including overnight, swing and dayside, in service of the live broadcast of Morning Edition.

• Tracks ongoing flow of news and recommends specific stories and areas of coverage, generating assignments for self and others.
• Assists in coverage planning across all platforms.
• Conceives, pitches, writes and edits news and feature content, for both broadcast and online.
• Responsible for editorial integrity and quality of products, ensuring that all materials meet NPR standards and practices.
• Works with Digital Content editors to produce digital stories and help develop a strategy to grow Morning Edition's online content.
• Works with the Digital Content Community Team and the Morning Edition Social Strategist to expand Morning Edition's social media presence.
• Maintains external relationships with information suppliers such as sources, freelancers and experts, member station news staff and journalists from other media.
• Works various shifts, as assigned
• Performs other duties as assigned, including the possibility of newsroom rotations to support other NPR news magazines, newscast unit, news gathering desks, programming or other editorial teams as required.


Education: Bachelor's degree in Journalism, or writing-intensive discipline and/or equivalent work experience

Required Skills:
• Editor II - At least six years of experience as a reporter, editor, or producer in a newsroom.
• Editor III - At least eight - ten years of experience as a reporter, editor, or producer in a newsroom
• Editor II - A minimum of two years of experience in editorial decision-making.
• Editor III- A minimum of four years of experience in editorial decision-making
• Demonstrated skill in news-writing techniques for both radio broadcast and online media.
• Considerable skill and ease in writing and copy editing.
• Solid, independent news judgement.
• Demonstratable understanding of journalistic ethics.
• Demonstrated ability to organize and disseminate information and to coordinate news coverage.
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously, and to manage changing priorities and conditions.
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Strong knowledge of Associated Press style
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts to support the Morning Edition team.
• Ability and willingness to travel.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.

Preferred Competencies & Skills:
• Expertise in editing content under breaking news conditions.
• Experience working on a live broadcast, either radio or TV.
• Experience working with audio editing software.
• Familiarity with navigating a variety of content management systems.
• Demonstrated ability to participate in, contribute to and grow online communities.
