OVERVIEW

INTRO TO POSITION
NPR's National Desk is looking for a Deputy National Editor to help lead coverage of the United States on all platforms.
The Deputy National Editor, in partnership with the Chief National Editor and the other Deputy National Editor, has overall editorial and operational responsibility for national coverage. This editor will also be responsible for helping build and maintain collaborative relationships with NPR's network of Member stations.
We're looking for a creative thinker – someone who can see past incremental developments to find the throughline and who can take a straight news story and give it a distinctive framing. The candidate should be a seasoned features editor who has a track record of planning and executing sophisticated short- and long-term projects. We want someone who can elevate our storytelling on air and online.
This deputy editor should enjoy being in the middle of multiple things at once. We expect this person to have outstanding news judgment. They should be unflappable in the face of tight deadlines and able to work with Member stations and with editors across the newsroom. This deputy editor will coach others on the desk and track staff performance.
This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff are defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPR's content, including events.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Manages editorial planning and coordination of coverage by providing editorial guidance to staff, stations, freelance reporters and production staff.
• Builds and maintains relationships with NPR member stations to increase NPR's focus on continuous collaboration on coverage across the country.
• Works with internal staff and stakeholders to determine the proper approach to stories, subjects to be discussed and treated, and individuals to be interviewed, as well as planning editorial projects and groups of stories thematically.
• Supervises the preparation of on-air and online material and is responsible for the editorial integrity and quality of that material.
• Monitors programming and provides critiques.
• Supervises and prepares performance reviews of staff members.
• Makes hiring recommendations for staff under his or her supervision, in consultation with the Chief National Editor and others as designated.
• Recommends salary levels of staff under his or her supervision, in consultation with the Chief National Editor.
• Conducts outreach, answers correspondence, represents the unit in public forums, organizes internships, maintains station relations, and works with the promotion and public information departments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• At least 10 years' experience as a news reporter or editor, including demonstrated experience covering national news, including investigative stories, feature reports
• A minimum of 5 years' management experience, with proven successes managing a diverse team of employees
• Strong familiarity with National affairs
• Considerable skill in both news and feature editing
• Previous broadcast news experience
• Strong knowledge of digital and social content and audiences
• Interest in regional politics and issues
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Previous experience with investigative stories, including the generation of story ideas and the research and development of such stories
• Demonstrated skill in oral presentation
• Understanding and use of principles of effective management
• Thorough knowledge of broadcast writing and audio production
• Thorough knowledge of digital/social communication
• Extensive daily news experience
• Previous broadcast news experience
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
WORK LOCATION
• Hybrid Permitted: This is a hybrid permitted role. Some aspects of this role include duties that are better performed at an NPR facility. The employee will be required to be onsite at the Washington, DC or Culver City office at least 30 days out of the year. The employee must also reside in an NPR-supported location based on the number of required on-site days.
JOB TYPE
• This is a full-time, exempt position.
COMPENSATION
Salary Range: The US-based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $160,000-$172,000 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
