The Deputy Managing Editor for Talent and Leadership Development will be a key player in helping to enrich the NPR content staff with diverse talent. Reporting to the vice presidents for news programming and news gathering, you will partner with our Human Resources Talent Acquisition team, to lead efforts to source and develop top multi-platform editorial talent into the NPR newsroom, with an emphasis on diversity & inclusion in our leadership. You will also be a primary point of contact and leader in serving the temporary employee population of our news and programming divisions, including providing growth and development opportunities.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Partner with NPR leaders to develop a pool of current and future candidates for key NPR positions across all platforms and skill sets including programming, newsgathering, broadcasting, visuals and digital.
• Assist in sourcing and recruiting for key hires, while adhering to best industry practices.
• Source and manage external recruiting services, in partnership with HR, that may be needed for critical news positions.
• Share constructive feedback with candidates
• Serve as the primary day-to-day point person for temporary news and programming staff at NPR, assisting with development and growth opportunities and partnering to build program for temp employee staffing.
• Build and maintain ties with journalism affinity groups
• Develop and maintain relations with NPR member stations newsrooms, in partnership with the Managing Editor for Collaborative Journalism
• Develop outreach and sourcing metric
• Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
• Cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace culture

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's Degree preferred, or equivalent work experience in a newsroom.

REQUIRED SKILLS
• Deep commitment to diversity and inclusion
• 10+ years of journalism experience, preferably at the national level
• A demonstrated track record of hiring and developing diverse teams
• A demonstrable network of contacts to draw from.
• Ability to lead and collaborate in a highly matrixed organization
• Ability to partner across functions to create learning and development opportunities for employees
• Experience with managing a team
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Interpersonal skills; enjoys networking, and working with people at all skill levels of the organization.
• Detail-oriented with strong time management skills and an ability to prioritize
• Adaptable to constantly changing environment
• Open and responsive to feedback

PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience with audio preferred but not required
• Familiarity with NPR member stations and public media system preferred
• Ability to work with LinkedIn Recruiter, AIRS or other applicant tracking tools
