The core responsibility of the Deputy Editor, Investigations, is to uphold one of the most vital elements of NPR's public service mission: holding powerful institutions to account. This means conceiving, directing and editing some of the network's most complex and consequential works of original journalism on all platforms. Reporting to the Senior Investigations Editor, the Deputy Investigations Editor will help supervise and lead a growing team of more than 20 journalists specializing in distinctive investigative reporting.
NPR is looking for an ambitious, experienced investigative editor who can guide a group of reporters, producers, researchers, data analysts and other journalists toward the creation of essential original journalism that serves the public interest. The Investigations Team's work appears on NPR's primary audio programs, including Morning Edition and All Things Considered, as well as many other of the network's audio and digital platforms. The team also takes the lead in creating some of the network's most acclaimed limited-release podcasts. The Deputy Editor, Investigations, must be someone with the skills and the steady hand required to excel in all of these formats.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Share responsibility for the success of the Investigations Team's journalism on all platforms, including digital and visual media, social networks and various audio platforms, with the goal of reaching the largest audiences with the biggest impact.
• Help conceive stories and coverage strategies that fit within NPR's news coverage needs and make the most of its considerable resources committed to incisive, important investigative journalism.
• Assign, develop and edit original investigative stories that live up to NPR's standards for accuracy, fairness and newsworthiness.
• Edit both short-term and longer-term projects, sometimes simultaneously.
• Edit stories for both audio and print, often on tight deadlines.
• Supervise team members, providing strong consistent leadership and regular constructive feedback on performance.
• Work collaboratively with team members, other NPR employees, Member station reporters and editors and external editorial partners.
• Ensure that all content complies with NPR's editorial standards.
• Represent NPR and the Investigations Team in internal and external forums and meetings as needed.
• Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
• Cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace culture.
• Supervise at least 15 direct reports, including preparing their regular performance reviews, and making effective recommendations regarding any hiring, promotion, and discipline for these positions.
• Assume other duties as assigned by the Senior Investigations Editor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: College degree and/or equivalent work experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least 10 years of journalism experience.
• A proven track record of editing original, complex investigative stories of consequence on tight deadlines.
• History of producing sophisticated, high-quality journalism, including work on complex topics and story ideas.
• Significant supervisory experience, including experience leading teams and managing significant projects.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills, public speaking ability and demonstrated writing ability.
• Ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions.
• Ability to work efficiently, calmly and cooperatively under deadline pressure.
• Willingness to innovate, learn new skills and create new ways to serve the NPR community on all platforms.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Ability and willingness to travel.
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Significant experience producing and editing audio journalism.
• Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system.
