Temporary Associate Producer, All Things Considered
OVERVIEW

NPR's All Things Considered is the flagship newsmagazine show for the network. Hosts Juana Summers, Ari Shapiro, Mary Louise Kelly, Ailsa Chang and Scott Detrow work with a team of editors and producers to provide the latest details on breaking news, as well as the crucial context behind those stories. The launch of afternoon news podcast Consider This in 2020, provided an additional platform for helping listeners understand the news by explaining the systems and structures behind it.

The ideal candidate for this position will believe deeply in the responsibility of public service journalism. They/she/he will have a capacity and passion for mentoring staff at all skill levels, and will thrive in a deadline-driven and collaborative environment.

This position is based in Washington, DC, and may require occasional travel. It is a Wednesday - Sunday work week.

Collective Bargaining Agreement Statement (only use for union represented roles as the last paragraph in this section): This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with (select one) SAG-AFTRA.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assembles on-air materials prior to broadcast and direct pre-recorded elements as needed.
• Initiates, plans and produces program material for weekend shows, with minimal editorial supervision.
• With supervision, conceives and executes enterprise episodes of the Consider This podcast.
• Consistently generates timely and well thought-out story/interview ideas.
• Edits tape and related continuity, with minimal editorial supervision.
• Writes news and program copy, including drafts of hosts' leads and other production copy.
• Completes weekend segments that are unfinished from weekday staff.
• Maintains working knowledge of all the latest sound-gathering and filing technologies in use at NPR.
• Maintains internal relationships with program staff across all NPR platforms including broadcast, online, social media, reporters/editors contributing to daily program and departments providing support services.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least four years of radio production experience including experience on broadcast digital audio workstations (ie MTE/DAVID, Dalet, Adobe Audition, ProTools or similar)
• Expertise in producing broadcast shows and writing/editing copy under breaking news conditions.
• At least two years of experience in editorial decision making with demonstrated ability to exercise solid, independent news judgment.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts as assigned.
• Demonstrated ability to assimilate and organize large amounts of information
• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes, with changing priorities/conditions.
• Familiarity with a range of subject areas such as world news, business, science, and arts.
• Demonstrated excellence in news writing and copy-editing, especially on deadline
• Understanding of journalistic ethics.
• Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability and willingness to travel
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.

PREFERRED SKILLS
• Demonstrated ability to help coordinate daily news coverage quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system.
• Experience with digital and multimedia production.
• Demonstrated understanding of, and familiarity with, social media platforms.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

College degree or equivalent work experience in some field of science, science journalism or science communication.

WORK LOCATION
• Hybrid Permitted: This is a hybrid permitted role. Some aspects of this role include duties that are better performed at an NPR facility. The employee will be required to be onsite at the Washington, DC
office at least 10 days a year. The employee must also reside in an NPR supported location based on the number of onsite days they choose.

JOB TYPE
• This is a temporary (6-month) full time position.

COMPENSATION

Hourly Rate: The US based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $40.86- $45.67 per hour. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
