Job Description
The Sports Director leads station coverage of local high school, college, and professional sports on all platforms in a manner that is clear, engaging, and meaningful to news consumers.

This is a time-consuming role which requires elite organizational skills. Sports Director at NBC4 is one of the most-coveted sports positions in the nation, in particular for journalists with an interest in college football. Ohio State is a massive piece of our daily sports programming. Also of interest in central Ohio: an NHL team, three NFL teams, 2 MLB teams, 2 MLS teams, an NBA team and one of the biggest tournaments on the PGA Tour.

The NBC4 Sports Team, under the guidance of the Sports Director, has provided on-site coverage of the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals, CFP National Championship, NCAA Final Four and the Olympics in just the past few years. This is the first time this position has become available in the Columbus market in 18 years.

The NBC4 Sports Director:

Produces and presents sports reports for platforms including on air, online and social media.

Ensures all sports content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.

Writes and delivers sports stories in a clear and concise manner while meeting multiple daily deadlines.

Shoots and edits video and writes copy for on air and online.

Has specific knowledge of video usage policies for all major sports events.

Works with news managers to plan sports coverage that may include out of town travel.

Responds to breaking sports events and other urgent newsroom situations as required.

Responsible for planning sports coverage for both scheduled and unscheduled events and manages sports department storytelling with an emphasis on local enterprise sports reporting.

Participates in promotional activities including public appearances on behalf of the station.

Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

Engages in ongoing technical and performance training as assigned.

Participates in professional use of social media platforms.

Requirements & Skills:

Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field

Fluency in English

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required

Minimum five years' experience in professional broadcast sports reporting and anchoring; experience managing a sports department a plus

Superior on-air presence

Ability to manage coverage of breaking sports news and scheduled sporting events and manage assignments by other members of the sports department

Ability to carry up to 50 pounds and work in various weather conditions

Ability to operate a news camera and editing equipment

Proficiency with computers, social media, and other office equipment

Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

Ability to effectively listen to understand problems and communicate with a team to shape a solution

Strong understanding of high school, college, and professional sports

Valid driver's license with a good driving record

Flexibility to work any shift, including nights, weekends and holidays; willing and available to travel for coverage of major sporting events out of town
