Job Description
Where are the best and worst places to live? What data points are fueling the rise in multigenerational households? Why are Americans' views on EVs changing?

The Hill, a division of Nexstar Media Group, seeks a Staff Writer to join our growing news team as we work to be even more relevant to more Americans.

This is a remote, work-from-home position. You need not live in the Washington, DC, area.

About the role

The American trends reporter lives at the junction of poll data and demographic trends to uncover stories that chronicle America's shifting viewpoints and lives. This position uses polls, rankings and independent research data to stitch together narratives that define the ways Americans live and how their demographics, thoughts, beliefs and living conditions shift over time.
Opportunities exist for fast-turn daily stories as well as deeper enterprise coverage. The right candidate will collaborate with The Hill's expert team of reporters covering politics and policy to pair strong data-driven stories with angles on how DC's political climate is impacting the nation.

Skills and qualifications

The right candidate knows where to look to find the data-driven seeds of a story, but they also know how to seek out real people powering those data points. This person can take a table of numbers and make it not only accessible, but compelling and human.

Candidates should have good instincts for understanding what data makes for a strong story. They'll back their instincts up with strong data skills, fluency with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets and how to sift data to reveal trends. The best candidates will know how to not just turn data into a strong story, but how to build compelling data visualizations using commercially available tools. But the most important skill is innate curiosity - reporters on this beat know how to hunt down great datasets, but they're driven by the urge to understand and explain the 'why' behind the numbers.

Please upload your materials combined into one single document with as much of the following as possible: your updated resume, a brief cover letter explaining your interest and fit for the position, and your portfolio/clips or links to a few samples of your work. Completing these steps will ensure that you receive the highest consideration.
