Job Description
Nexstar Topeka seeks a versatile Broadcast Meteorologist and News Producer to join our dynamic newsroom. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to deliver impactful weather coverage on-air while also shaping the day's news as a newscast producer.
The successful candidate will deliver weekend morning weather forecasts, produce our 9 p.m. newscast three days a week, and fill in on other meteorology shifts as needed.
Key Responsibilities
As a Meteorologist:
• Prepare and present accurate, engaging weather forecasts across all platforms.
• Monitor and respond to severe weather and breaking news.
• Collaborate with the weather team to provide comprehensive coverage.
• Post timely forecast updates and weather stories to web and social platforms.
• Represent the station at community events and promotional appearances.
• Shoot, write, and edit weather/news packages as needed.
As a News Producer:
• Produce compelling daily newscasts with a strong mix of news and features.
• Write and edit scripts, teases, and video content for broadcast and digital.
• Approve scripts, time the newscast, and manage story flow.
• Coordinate live shots and work closely with the team to deliver high-quality productions.
• Post stories and videos to the website and social media.
• Engage with viewers and audiences through digital platforms.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in meteorology or related field.
• Solid forecasting skills and familiarity with radar systems.
• Strong writing, shooting, and non-linear editing skills (Adobe Premiere preferred.)
• Familiarity with ENPS or similar newsroom systems is helpful.
• Strong communication and time management skills.
• Ability to meet deadlines and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
• Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays.
