Job Description
The Hill, a division of Nexstar Media Group, is hiring a Congressional Reporter to cover the House of Representatives. The position will be focused on legislation moving through committees and on to the House floor, including final votes in the House. This is a big job focusing on both national politics and the unique politics of the House. It requires a familiarity and comfort with writing about a range of policies.
About the role:
The person filling this role will be responsible for a mix of spot news stories, regular briefs and features. A successful candidate will have the ability to build sources that can help provide daily scoops to be used across The Hill's platforms, including our newsletters. We want to write stories that make people stop and think, and that grab their attention. Candidates who gravitate toward news stories that are unique, and who can write in a compelling and informative way, will have the best chance of success in this role.
The ability to work collaboratively with others on the Congress team and on various policy beats is key.
Responsibilities include:
-Covering the House floor, including big and small votes. Taking note of floor strategy sessions, spats and huddles. Recognizing news immediately when it happens, while also recognizing trend stories that affect the political scene.
-Writing a mix of short and longer news briefs and features for The Hill's website and newspaper.
- Contributing to our Morning Report newsletter and other daily and weekly products.
- An ability to go on television and discuss complex policies and political fights in a digestible manner.
Skills and qualifications:
A degree in journalism or a related field is required, and previous reporting experience in a metro or national media environment is preferred.
Candidates should have good instincts for understanding what readers want and be able to produce error-free, clean journalism on a tight timetable. Basic familiarity with Google Trends, SEO skills and real-time analytics are a plus.

Compensation range: $65,000 to $70,000 commensurate with experience and skill level.
