Vice President / General Counsel

Job Description

NewsNation is seeking an experienced VP/General Counsel to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the First Amendment and its application to news media, as well as a strong background in media law and litigation. In this role, you will be responsible for providing legal guidance and support to NewsNation's newsroom and management team, ensuring that the organization's reporting remains legally compliant and upholds the highest journalistic standards. From time to time, you may also be called upon to provide legal advice to the broader Nexstar businesses, including local broadcasters.

Key Responsibilities:
• Provide legal counsel to NewsNation's newsroom and management team on a range of First Amendment and media law issues, including libel, privacy, access, and freedom of information.
• Work closely with NewsNation's editorial team to review content for legal risks, including pre-publication review of stories and broadcast scripts.
• Represent NewsNation in litigation matters, including defending against defamation or other claims. Coordinate with outside counsel as appropriate.
• Develop and implement legal policies and procedures to ensure that NewsNation's reporting is legally compliant and upholds the highest ethical standards.
• Collaborate with other departments within NewsNation, including marketing, sales, and technology, to ensure that the organization's legal needs are met across all areas of operation.
• Stay up to date on legal developments and trends in media law and provide regular training and guidance to NewsNation's newsroom and management team.
• Assist, as necessary, with legal support of other Nexstar divisions, including local broadcasters and The Hill.

Qualifications:
• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in Illinois.
• At least 7 years of experience as a VP level attorney with a focus on media law.
• Strong understanding of First Amendment principles and their application to news media.
• Demonstrated ability to provide effective legal counsel to newsrooms and media organizations.
• Experience representing media organizations in litigation, including defending against defamation claims and challenging government efforts to restrict access to information.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and mitigate legal risks.
• Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
