Job Description

Our efforts have brought Netflix to virtually all countries around the globe and we are excited to bring even more of our Originals programming to our viewers everywhere.

THE ROLE

Netflix seeks an intellectually curious attorney to join the Netflix Content Business and Legal Affairs (BLA) team. Based in Los Angeles, the counsel role will focus on the Original Anime content initiative. The counsel will collaborate closely with the cross-functional Original Anime team in Japan, as well as with the rest of the Netflix BLA team in LA, in handling a wide variety development, rights and intellectual property acquisition, and production deals with writers, producers, above-the-line talent (e.g., voice over), and animation studios for Original Anime projects produced both in and out of Japan, like Blood of Zeus and Castlevania. While the role is focused on Original Anime content, the LA-based Original Anime BLA team is embedded in the Original Independent Film (OIF) BLA group, which focuses on financing, developing, producing and acquiring films like To All The Boys I've Loved Before and Chicago 7. There may be opportunities, therefore, for the counsel also to work on projects originating from the OIF content team as well.

The role will be primarily responsible for structuring, drafting and negotiating above-the-line talent agreements, rights agreements, development agreements, production services agreements and other production, finance, license and acquisition agreements for Original Anime. The candidate must be comfortable challenging norms and finding ways to create efficiencies for this high volume team in order to remain nimble, accomplish Netflix's objectives and execute the Original Anime strategy. The candidate will also be responsible for overseeing matters that arise throughout the production process and making judgment calls that align with the company's long term objectives. The ideal candidate must be very comfortable counseling and collaborating with internal and external business partners, producers, production counsel and production partners and making decisions that have both legal and business impact. Excellent written and drafting skills are a must.

The ideal candidate will welcome the opportunity to be part of a fast‐paced, entrepreneurial organization and thrive in communicating in a global environment. The role is based in Los Angeles and some international travel will be required.

REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will have at least 8+ years of relevant business and legal affairs experience in film and/or series working for a production company, studio or law firm.

In addition, the candidate will possess the following:
• Curiosity and willingness to tackle matters outside their area of expertise
• Strong communication skills (candor, honesty)
• Passion for business and legal affairs and tackling new and complex legal challenges
• Strong analytical (strategic and creative) capabilities and judgment
• Ability to work proactively, independently and reliably under tight time frames in a fast‐paced environment
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively cross‐functionally, think pragmatically and be solution‐oriented
• Adaptable negotiation style
• Passion for Anime and film, the business and Netflix's Anime and film strategies
• JD from a top law school
